The officer was responding to reports of a fire when he hit the child on the Pacific Highway at St Leonards, on Sydney's lower north shore, at 7.20pm on Monday. A NSW Police spokesman said officers gave first aid to the child before paramedics arrived at the scene. The nine-year-old was rushed to Sydney Children's Hospital in Randwick in a stable condition. The driver was given a roadside breath test and returned a negative result. Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
