stratejik hata olabileceğini belirtti. Almanya'nın Hamburg kentinde Die Zeit gazetesinin 80. yıl etkinliğinde konuşan von der Leyen, AB'nin genişlemesini desteklediğine dikkati çekerek, "Avrupa kıtasını tamamlamayı başarmalıyız ki Rus, Türk veya Çin etkisine girmesin. Daha büyük ve jeopolitik düşünmeliyiz." ifadesini kullandı. Bunun üzerine AB Komisyonu, Türkiye'nin hem ekonomik hem siyasi açıdan önemli bir müttefik olduğunu vurgulayarak, söz konusu ifadede Türkiye'nin anılmasının herhangi bir doğrudan karşılaştırmadan ziyade jeopolitik ağırlığını yansıttığını belirtti. AB Komisyonu Sözcüsü, Türkiye'nin, Trans-Hazar Uluslararası Taşımacılık Koridoru olarak da bilinen Orta Koridor gibi bağlantı girişimleri, göç yönetimi ve NATO müttefiki ile AB'ye aday ülke statüsü gibi stratejik alanlardaki rolünün altını çizerek Ankara'yı "kilit muhatap" olarak nitelendirdi. Buna karşın uzmanlar, açıklamanın tonu ve sonuçlarına dair eleştirilerde bulundu. Chatham House araştırmacısı Timothy Ash, AA muhabirine yaptığı açıklamada, "Açıkçası bunun olağanüstü bir açıklama olduğunu düşünüyorum." ifadesini kullanarak, Türkiye'nin "NATO'nun sadık bir müttefiki ve AB adayı olmaya devam ettiğini" vurguladı. Türkiye'nin Avrupa'nın güvenliğine doğrudan katkı sağladığını belirten Ash, "Türkiye hala Avrupa'nın sadık bir müttefiki. Türk askerleri Avrupa'nın sınırlarının savunulmasına yardımcı oluyor." dedi. Türkiye'nin Avrupa'daki NATO üyesi ülkeler arasında en büyük kara ordusuna, gelişmiş askeri sanayi kompleksine ve insansız hava araçlarında uzmanlığa sahip olduğuna dikkati çeken Ash, "Türkiye'nin Avrupa'nın savunmasının ayrılmaz bir parçası olması gerekirken von der Leyen'in açıklamalarının akıl dışı" olduğunu ifade etti. IstanPol düşünce kuruluşunun Dış Politika Koordinatörü Riccardo Gasco da AA muhabirine yaptığı açıklamada, söz konusu açıklamaların AB'nin Türkiye'ye yönelik süregelen belirsiz yaklaşımını yansıttığını söyledi. Gasco, Brüksel'in Türkiye'nin güvenlik, savunma, göç ve bölgesel diplomasi alanlarındaki artan önemini kabul ettiğini ancak AB içinde bazı kesimlerin, Türkiye'yi "entegre edilmesi gereken bir ortak yerine yönetilmesi gereken bir jeopolitik unsur" olarak gördüğünü belirtti. Bu yaklaşımın sıkıntılı olduğunu vurgulayan Gasco, "Bu durum sorunlu çünkü Avrupa'nın savunma ve ekonomik stratejilerdeki mevcut sınırlılıkları, Türkiye ile işbirliğini daha az değil daha fazla gerekli kılıyor. Türkiye'yi daha fazla uzaklaştırmak siyasi açıdan ters etki yaratır ve stratejik olarak dar görüşlü bir yaklaşım olur." dedi. "Türkiye, bir aday ülke, NATO müttefiki ve Avrupa'nın daha geniş güvenlik mimarisinde önemli bir aktör olarak varlığını sürdürüyor." ifadesini kullanan Gasco, aday ülke statüsünü koruyan bir ülkeye yönelik küçümseyici dil kullanılmasının yapıcı olmadığını kaydetti. Gasco, AB içinde Türkiye'ye yönelik farklı yaklaşımların bulunduğunu belirterek, siyasi çekinceler sürerken stratejik gerekliliklerin işbirliğini zorunlu kıldığını, bu nedenle AB'nin politikalarının zaman zaman tutarsız göründüğünü söyledi.
