It comes after Left-wing councils warned they would defy the equality watchdog guidance, claiming it harmed 'the rights of trans people'. Kemi Badenoch's party criticised Labour, Lib Dem and Green councils for refusing to follow the law, and insisted the Tories 'believe in protecting the rights of women and girls'. In April last year, the Supreme Court ruled that the legal definition of a woman was based on biological sex. The Equality and Human Rights Commission's Code of Practice based on the ruling came into force this week. It says any organisation providing public services – such as the NHS, shops, gyms, councils, government departments, police, prisons, hotels and restaurants – must legally enforce single-sex spaces on the basis of biological sex rather than gender identity.
