By CAMERON CHARTERS and OLIVIA CHRISTIE, NEWS REPORTER Published: 18:52, 17 July 2026 | Updated: 18:53, 17 July 2026 This is the moment a 'psychotic' Afghan migrant was Tasered by police after he stabbed a dog walker to death and left his landlord fighting for his life in a frenzied knife rampage.  Dawood Safi, 28, is set to be detained indefinitely at Broadmoor Hospital for the killing of Wayne Broadhurst, 49, in Uxbridge, west London, on October 27 last year. Safi also left his landlord Shahzad Farrukh, 45, with life-changing injuries and a 14-year-old boy was hospitalised with knife wounds, Southwark Crown Court heard. Police bodycam footage shows officers detaining Safi, whose hands are visibly covered in blood, in the street after the attack.  The taxi driver refused to drop his weapon - despite being ordered to do so several times by officers - and was Tasered before being placed in handcuffs.  On July 13, prosecutors accepted Safi's guilty plea to the manslaughter of Mr Broadhurst on the basis of diminished responsibility after he denied murder. The court heard Safi, who arrived in the UK 'concealed in a lorry' in 2020, was in the midst of a mental health episode when he carried out the 'entirely unprovoked, ferocious and senseless killing'.  Mr Farrukh also could have died from his wounds but several neighbours, including one wielding a walking stick, rushed out to help him. He was left with 'life-changing injuries' in the bloodbath, while the boy, who cannot be named, was hospitalised with hand injuries after the 'big butcher's knife' was waved just two inches from his head. Police bodycam footage shows officers detaining Dawood Safi, whose hands are visibly covered in blood, in the street after the attack Safi, pictured, killed Wayne Broadhurst moments after he stabbed his landlord and a boy The Uber driver refused to drop his weapon - despite being ordered to do so several times by officers - and was Tasered before being placed in handcuffs Two days before the attack on October 25 he visited his local GP and hospital complaining about hearing voices but was turned away.  Mental health staff concluded he did not have an illness which required the attention of a hospital. After his arrest, Safi told psychiatrists he felt 'guilty' and 'feared the judgement of God' because he had 'viewed naked images of women'. In a statement after the conclusion of the trial, Mr Broadhurst's family said: 'Our family is devastated by the tragic loss of our beloved Wayne Broadhurst, aged 49. 'Wayne was a kind, caring and loving man who meant the world to us. He had a heart of gold and was the type of person who would do anything for anyone.  'He never met a stranger and had a way of making everyone feel welcome.  'To those who knew him, Wayne was more than a family member or friend – he was someone you could always rely on. 'Wayne's passion for Liverpool Football Club was well known. He lived and breathed football, and supporting Liverpool brought him immense joy.  'Whether watching a match with family and friends or talking football with anyone who would listen, his enthusiasm was infectious. 'The loss of Wayne has left an enormous void in our lives that can never be filled. Wayne Broadhurst wearing his Liverpool FC hat was a devoted fan and much loved family man Mr Broadhurst was captured on CCTV footage walking his dog moments before he was stabbed to death in the street  'We will cherish the memories, laughter and love he gave us every day, and we will miss him beyond words. 'As a family, we would like to thank everyone who has shown us kindness, compassion and support during this incredibly difficult time.  'We also ask that our privacy is respected as we come to terms with our devastating loss. 'Wayne will forever remain in our hearts and will never be forgotten. You'll Never Walk Alone.' The prosecution accepted his plea of manslaughter but Safi stood trial for attempting to murder Mr Farrukh and the teenage boy. Bearded and bald-headed Safi appeared in court via video-link from Broadmoor maximum security psychiatric hospital aided by an Arabic interpreter. Safi denied but was convicted by the jury of attempting to murder Mr Farrukh at Southwark Crown Court. Mrs Justice Cutts discharged the jury from reaching a verdict on the remaining charge of attempted murder relating to the boy after the foreman indicated they were deadlocked on that count. A police officer armed with a Taser chasing Safi moments before he is arrested for the attack The Afghan migrant is warded off by members of the public during his rampage in Uxbridge, London in October Safi had earlier admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm to the 14-year-old. The judge said she will sentence Safi on October 5 after psychiatric reports are prepared. The court heard the judge will have to decide whether Safi will be detained under section 37 of the Mental Health Act in Broadmoor, twinned with an indefinite order under restriction 41, meaning he cannot be released without the approval of the Justice Secretary. Mrs Justice Cutts commended members of the Rogers family, including Steven and his sister Jessica for their 'conspicuous bravery' in rushing to Mr Farrukh's aid and trying to save Mr Broadhurst's life. She said: 'Mr Rogers performed CPR on Mr Broadhurst for some time before the emergency services arrived. Their bravery and courage was outstanding.' Earlier Jonathan Laidlaw, KC, prosecuting said Safi had 'suffered a collapse in his mental health' in the days leading up to the attacks. 'The defendant, according to four psychiatrists who have examined him since October of last year, was in a psychotic state. 'In other words, he had lost contact with reality and was unable to distinguish between what was real and what was not. Safi can be seen walking past Mr Broadhurst's dog - as his victim lies dying in the street Safi, pictured circled in yellow, runs towards a teenager during a knife attack which killed a dog walker and left his landlord seriously injured  'Because of the defendant's psychotic state, he is not being tried for murdering the man who lost his life at the defendant's hand. 'It does not mean he was incapable of forming the intention to kill. 'He is not insane, as the law defines that word, meaning he did not know the nature or quality of his acts, or that he was doing wrong. 'The evidence plainly shows it was his intention to kill, both when he attacked Mr Farrukh and the boy, and unfortunately Wayne Broadhurst, who lost his life just a few minutes later. The boy, who witnessed the attack, 'punched at the defendant to the top of his head, with the result that the defendant slashed or stabbed at the boy, swinging the knife two or three inches above [his] head.' One witness described Safi as looking 'like he was possessed' when he pursued the pair as they escaped next door. The prosecutor said it was Mr Broadhurst's 'terrible fortune' to have appeared just as Safi was outside the house in Midhurst Gardens. He suffered a 'sustained, ferocious, and unsurvivable' attack, jurors heard. 'For no apparent reason, rational or otherwise, he was stabbed to death by this defendant in a frenzied, random and entirely unprovoked assault.' Mr Broadhurst, a street cleaner for Hillingdon Council and a Liverpool fan, died 'almost instantly' at the scene, with his dog Harry by his side. King's College Hospital consultant forensic psychiatrist Professor Nigel Blackwood assessed Safi, he concluded 'his immigration status and relative social isolation' were 'risk factors' in his psychosis. Safi had arrived 'concealed in a lorry' as a refugee in 2020, and was working as a taxi driver after being granted asylum in the UK in 2022 with leave to remain until 2027. Detective Inspector Richard MacKenzie, who led the investigation, said: 'This was a shocking attack that, tragically, led to Wayne Broadhurst's death and had a huge impact on the local community. 'As the tributes paid to him after his death showed, Wayne was a hugely popular member of the community and my thoughts remain with his family and loved ones. 'I want to recognise the devastating impact of Safi's brutal attack on his two victims who survived the attack and to commend the exceptional bravery they showed in the face of such violence. 'The physical and emotional consequences of this traumatic incident are likely to be felt for many years to come. 'Finally, I want to pay tribute to the courageous members of the public who attempted to protect the victims from the attacker, as well as the police officers who were first on the scene of this incident.'
