Matthew McConaughey teases political leap after Pope Leo audience - as Republican speculation grows

The Oscar-winning actor has once again fueled questions over whether he'll eventually make the leap from Hollywood to public office after revealing more details about his recent encounter with Pope Leo XIV. McConaughey met the pontiff during the Pope's weekly general audience at St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City on August 5, where he was accompanied by his wife, Camila Alves McConaughey. The encounter clearly left an impression on the actor. McConaughey described the Pope as someone capable of representing 'the moral compass of the world' and indicated the Pope's sense of humor caught him off guard. When USA TODAY asked McConaughey if meeting Pope Leo had changed the way he thinks about a possible future in politics, he gave a typically measured response. 'Look, I'm going to use this word 'religion,' even though some people are going to tune out when they hear that word,' McConaughey said. Speaking on The Tonight Show, McConaughey compared preparing to meet the pontiff with preparing for the Academy Awards. 'You don't know if you're going to win, so if you win and you pull out a speech, it's kind of arrogant, right? But I got to talk to him about some nice things.' McConaughey said the brief exchange went off script, with Pope Leo surprising him with his quick wit. 'He made me laugh, which is one of the things I think is consistent about the holiest and most spiritual people in the world; they've all got a great sense of humor,' he said. 'Life is essentially a religious experience... Even though I agree with the separation of church and state, the values of those should bleed down into the values of any political system. 'There's still a constitution out there to be written that all religions could agree on. There's so much commonality. It's a constitution that I'm excited about seeing – I don't know, maybe even adding to or working on.' The encounter comes amid years of speculation about whether McConaughey could seek political office. He was repeatedly asked about a run for governor of Texas in 2022, but ultimately did not stand. He has described himself as 'aggressively centric' and speaks frequently about the need to find common ground between Democrats and Republicans, advocating stronger gun regulations while emphasizing Second Amendment rights. Appearing over the years on Joe Rogan's podcast, he has taken aim at the left over cancel culture, Hollywood groupthink and what he sees as growing intolerance toward opposing views, while rejecting calls to defund the police and speaking sympathetically about traditional values and religion. McConaughey has previously said he would not seriously consider entering politics until his three children were fully grown. Ahead of the Vatican trip, he told USA TODAY he wanted to raise religion's place in modern society – particularly why young people appear to be turning toward faith. 'Where is religion today? Why has it declined? Why do we see a surge in youth running toward it? They've tried other things that they're seeing are vapid and don't really work because they're looking for more.' Young people are 'looking for some structure; they're trying to get more than what the world around them has given them,' he said. He also wanted to raise artificial intelligence, questioning what values will shape the technology – and warning against letting it shape humanity instead. 'There are already people looking to AI as their digital God,' McConaughey said. 'It is going to represent a true image of mankind by the questions we ask of it and the results we want of it. We may not like what we see when we look in the mirror, but we could also love what we see... So there's great upside and I'm excited about it. 'At the same time, there's a definite need for caution going forward because we're going to have to be the users of that tool and not let it tool us.' Last year McConaughey published Poems & Prayers, a collection reflecting his spiritual side.
