Madonna branded 'unrecognisable' as singer debuts striking appearance at Met Gala: 'Had no clue it was her!'
Madonna has caused quite the stir thanks to her Met Gala outfit choice on Monday evening, with some fans of the singer going as far as to brand her "unrecognisable".
The music icon leaned heavily in the "Fashion is Art" dress code at Monday's extravaganza, arriving in a custom Saint Laurent creation that certainly caught the eye.

The 67-year-old singer's gothic ensemble drew directly from British-Mexican artist Leonora Carrington's painting The Temptation of Saint Anthony, featuring a dramatic ship headpiece perched on top of a dark cap with silver detailing.
Seven female assistants surrounded the star, each wearing pastel gowns and sheer blindfolds whilst carrying her flowing cape, which billowed around her to create the impression of a ship caught in stormy seas.

Walking alongside Saint Laurent's creative director, Anthony Vaccarello, Madonna donned a ruffled black gown paired with satin opera gloves and chunky black boots.
The singer swapped her signature blonde hair for a jet black wig, styled by Eugene Souleiman with tousled waves and tightly braided strands around her face.
To complete the look, she clutched a golden horn whilst wearing statement rings over her gloves and a bold pendant necklace.
The helpers who accompanied the singer walked in formation, precisely mirroring the composition of the 1945 surrealist painting, which depicts figures carrying fabric around a central woman wearing an identical ship hat.

Madonna's eye-catching look soon sparked debate among fashion and music fans alike, with social media soon awash with critics keen to share their verdict on her appearance.
And some were so struck by the display that they struggled to even recognise one of music's best-known names.
Among those watching along at home who were left in disbelief by the Vogue singer's look was one X user who claimed: "I had no clue it was Madonna under the black schooner."
A second was similarly blown away: "Omg it was madonna i didnt even recognize her." (sic)

Others weighed in to share their bemusement at the ensemble choice. "Madonna thinks wearing a ship to a $100k ticket dinner is sensible," a third critiqued.
While a fourth was unimpressed: "OH MY GOD I JUST WOKE UP TO THIS MADONNA LOOKS SICKENING #MetGala." (sic)
However, the singer was on the receiving end of praise from some who applauded her elaborate red carpet appearance.
"Madonna creativity is out of this world #MetGala," one X user argued, while a second fan typed: "Madonna is not kidding with this new Era! She’s making us all GAG! #metgala." (sic)

Madonna has been a fixture at the Costume Institute's annual fundraiser for nearly three decades, having first attended in 1997 wearing a blue floral Versace gown honouring the designer.
Following a decade-long hiatus, she returned in 2009 and has since attended numerous events, including the 2018 "Heavenly Bodies" celebration where she wore an all-black Jean Paul Gaultier ensemble complete with a netted veil and cross-adorned crown.

At last year's "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" event, she arrived in a cream Tom Ford tuxedo accessorised with an unlit cigar.
The singer is preparing to release Confessions II on July 3, her first studio album in seven years.
