Katy Perry's 'weird' Met Gala outfit explained as experts reveal 'hidden meaning' behind faceless look
Katy Perry made a show-stopping comeback to fashion's most prestigious evening on Monday, attending the Met Gala for the first time since 2022.
The pop star arrived at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art completely unrecognisable, with her face concealed beneath a chrome fencing-inspired mask.
Dressed in the bespoke Stella McCartney creation, Ms Perry kept guests guessing before executing a grand reveal on the red carpet, detaching the silver portion of her face covering to confirm her identity.
The appearance marked her 10th Met Gala overall and left many viewers speculating over the true meaning of the look.

The white gown featured an off-shoulder design with a reverse basque bodice and sheer mesh panels along the sides, while a dramatic train trailed several feet behind her with brown-trimmed cutouts resembling singed fabric.
Serbian designer Miodrag Guberinic was behind the striking mirrored mask.
The singer accessorised with lengthy white opera gloves, one notably designed with six fingers, alongside tarot-style cards, including one bearing the phrase "Commit to the bit."
Ms Perry completed her look with metallic dental grills.

According to a press release, the mask was "designed to be a literal and symbolic reflection that invites the observer to consider that their perception of others can mirror their own internal world, and conversely mask truth".
The burned look at the end of her dress also appears to be a reference to her upcoming release: Let it Burn.
Within hours of Ms Perry's red carpet appearance, images of her ensemble began circulating widely on social media, prompting some users to claim the design contained "satanic" or "transhumanist" symbolism.
The mirrored mask and full-face covering were interpreted by conspiracy theorists as ritualistic imagery, whilst the six-fingered glove attracted particular attention online.

One person wrote on X: “The Met Gala looks like the who’s who in the satanic worshippers club.”
Another described the outfit as symbolic of a “self-entitled narcissist with god-like delusions of supremacy”.
Others drew pop culture comparisons, with one user commenting: “This reminds me of ‘The Capitol’ in The Hunger Games.”
"Could she be any more out of touch?" someone else asked, as another penned: “Weird… for sure..."
Some also referenced the singer’s contrasting past, with one asking: “Remember when she was a gospel singer?”
However, many fans rushed to her defence. One wrote: “Let’s be honest — in what way is this satanic or transhumanist?”
Another added: “She's always doing something crazy, I love it."
Experts have noted that extra digits are a common visual error in AI-generated images, suggesting the design was actually a reference to widely shared deepfake images of Ms Perry from previous years.

Neither Ms Perry, her representatives, nor the designers have indicated any occult or ideological meaning behind the outfit.
The Firework singer has long embraced the Met Gala as a platform for theatrical fashion statements, with her 2019 appearance remaining particularly notable.
For that year's "Camp: Notes on Fashion" theme, she wore a Jeremy Scott-designed crystal chandelier dress complete with working lights, powered by hidden battery packs, before changing into a giant cheeseburger costume for the after-party.
The 2018 event saw her don massive Versace angel wings for the "Heavenly Bodies" theme.
