Imtiaz Ali rules out sequels to 'Jab We Met' and 'Tamasha'

Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali finally responded to the long-running rumors about possible sequels to his beloved films Jab We Met and Tamasha. Both films have enjoyed lasting popularity and continue to hold a special place in the hearts of audiences. Jab We Met, released in October 2007 and starring Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor, became iconic for its lively romance, unforgettable characters, and chart-topping songs like Mauja Hi Mauja and Tum Se Hi. Over time, it has grown into a comfort film for many viewers. Nearly a decade later, Tamasha (2015), featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, struck a different chord. He explained that some films are complete in themselves and don’t require a follow-up. According to him, forcing a sequel could dilute the emotional impact and uniqueness that made the original films so memorable in the first place. Ali also emphasised that his creative journey is guided by genuine inspiration rather than external demand. He prefers to explore fresh ideas instead of revisiting old ones simply to capitalise on their success. In his view, storytelling should feel organic, and sequels should only happen if there is a truly meaningful reason behind them.
