Hantavirus symptoms to know as three Brits diagnosed on cruise ship amid outbreak

Three British nationals have been diagnosed with suspected Hantavirus following an outbreak of the disease aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship . The vessel is currently docked at the remote Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha, with two of the cases having already been medically evacuated. The third patient remains on board. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported eight cases so far, with three fatalities. Five of the eight cases have been confirmed as Hantavirus. Despite the severity of the virus, the WHO states that the risk to the general public remains very low. Nevertheless, experts are urging people to familiarise themselves with the symptoms and how to prevent infection, reports the Express . Declan Lismore, Superintendent Pharmacist at Chemist4U, warned: "Hantavirus can be serious to those that are exposed and you should be aware of the symptoms and how to take preventative action to avoid contracting it. "Most people won't encounter Hantavirus in everyday life but given the recent outbreak on board a cruise ship it is important that people understand the signs and symptoms of Hantavirus and how it is transmitted." Hantavirus is a collection of viruses carried by rodents that can trigger serious illness in humans. It is typically contracted through inhaling particles contaminated with rodent urine, faeces or saliva. Declan said: "However, the rare strain of Hantavirus linked to recent cases and fatalities has been known to spread between people in close contact. "While the risk to the public remains low and confirmed cases are isolated, the risk of human-to-human transmission means you should be aware of the symptoms." Fever Muscle aches Fatigue Headaches Nausea or abdominal pain The illness can worsen significantly and lead to Hantavirus Pulmonary Symptoms and Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome, both of which can trigger a persistent cough and breathing difficulties. Declan said: "At present, the outbreak of Hantavirus is isolated and it is important not to panic, however, due to the severity of these illnesses, it is crucial that you seek out medical assistance quickly if you experience any symptoms or if you come into contact with someone that tests positive for Hantavirus."
