Published: 07:44, 4 June 2026 | Updated: 07:44, 4 June 2026 A 'toxic' ex-boyfriend stabbed a real estate expert and their two daughters to death before killing himself inside her luxury gated community in Florida. The tragedy came to light on Tuesday when deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office were called to perform a welfare check at a home inside Doral Isles in South Florida. When cops arrived, they found four people stabbed to death inside.  The dead were later identified as Melanie Lauren Hyer, 46 and Ryan Charles Whiten, 42; in addition to their two daughters Savannah Whiten, 11, and Sienna Whiten, 8.  Authorities are investigating the deaths as a murder-suicide. A motive for the tragedy remains unclear. Whiten's ex-wife described the pair's relationship as 'toxic' during an interview and said they would argue over their daughters.  The woman - who broke down in tears while speaking - said she never saw signs of violence between Hyer and Whiten.   'He was always so sweet with his girls and loved them deeply,' the ex-wife said. 'I don't know what happened.'  Melanie Lauren Hyer, 46, and Ryan Charles Whiten, 42, were found dead inside a home in Doral, Florida Tuesday night in what authorities are investigating as a murder-suicide Their two daughters - Savannah Whiten, 11, and Sienna Whiten, eight, were also killed The ex-wife also said Whiten reached out to her three weeks ago, telling her how thankful he was to have her in his life. Looking back, she said, it appeared as if he was saying goodbye. Those who knew Hyer, meanwhile, remembered her as a loving mother and a hard worker. 'She was a beacon of light and was always eager to help out at her school,' said Doral Mayor Christi Fragga. 'Any loss of life is difficult to accept, particularly in moments where there are two young girls involved, and I knew their mother,' she told CBS News Miami. 'This is hard to accept in a community that is so close.' The mayor went on to call the murder-suicide 'a reminder to all of us about the importance of speaking up when there are mental health issues and potentially domestic violence issues because we have so many resources, and [this] is a reminder that you are not alone and we are here to help.' Former NBC South Florida investigative reporter Willard Shepard also said he was good friends with Hyer. 'She was an extremely giving person in a professional capacity, she was an expert in the areas of probate, foreclosure, those types of things.'  Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the scene for a welfare check just after 7.30pm He recounted that he had last spoken to Hyer about a month and a half ago, and didn't see any signs 'something like this' would happen. 'And obviously if there was some sign of that, not only would I have said something, but taken some action,' Shepard said. 'But there was simply nothing that gave me any indication that this could have potentially occurred.' The reporter also said he was told by neighbors that the girls had last been seen out riding their bicycles with their father on Sunday.  The two girls were students at Downtown Doral Charter Schools. 'Our community is mourning the loss of two of our beloved students,' the school said in a statement. 'Our heartfelt sympathies are with their families, friends, faculty and staff at our schools. These students will be deeply missed.' School officials noted that they would help students and staff with their grief. 'To support our students and staff, the school has arranged to have grief counselors on campus and will continue to provide support as needed,' they said. 'We encourage parents to talk openly with their children and closely monitor their wellbeing. Parents with any concerns or in need of additional support should contact the school.' The daughters were also members of the Doral Field Hockey team, which remembered them in an Instagram post on Wednesday. 'Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with their family, friends and all those whose lives were touched by them,' the team posted. 'They were an important part of our community and will be remembered for their kindness, friendship and the positive impact they had on everyone around them.'  No comments have so far been submitted.
