Energy alert: Households could get free £2,500 to pay for air conditioning units - are you eligible?

Homeowners across England and Wales can secure free air conditioning units valued at £2,500 through a Government initiative that remains relatively unknown to many families.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides grants covering air-to-air heat pumps, which typically cost around £1,900 to install according to Checkatrade estimates.

This funding opportunity comes at a particularly opportune moment as Britain endures its third heatwave this summer, with thermometers expected to reach a scorching 35 degrees celsius in certain regions today.

The scheme was broadened last November to encompass these cooling devices, representing the first occasion that air conditioning systems have qualified for Government financial support in the UK.

These dual-purpose devices function as cooling systems during warmer months whilst providing warmth when temperatures drop, offering year-round climate control from a single installation.

Minister for Energy Consumers Martin McCluskey has championed the initiative, stating: "Air-to-air heat pumps offer the best of both worlds keeping you warm in winter while cooling you down when summer comes along."

He added: "With heat pumps more popular than ever, we want to make sure as many people as possible can benefit, especially those in flats or small homes without central heating, so they have greater choice when upgrading their property."

To qualify for the grant, property owners must be switching from a fossil fuel or conventional electric heating system to a heat pump or another eligible device.

The scheme excludes most newly constructed properties, social housing, and anyone who has previously received Government funding for a heat pump or biomass boiler.

Ben Gallizzi, an energy expert at Uswitch, shared: "As the biggest heatwave of the year hits, we’re seeing shops selling out of air conditioning units, delayed delivery dates and other stores hiking their prices.

"Four million UK households already have air conditioning, but every time summer temperatures soar, there’s a growing clamour for cooling.

"Portable air conditioning units typically use 1kW of power, which means they will cost you almost 25p an hour in electricity. Built-in units can be even more energy-intensive, with a 2.7kW unit costing you 67p an hour when it’s running at full power.

"Air con can make life more comfortable and potentially improve sleep quality during heatwaves."
