Donald Trump gives update on mad UFC cage fight at the White House

Donald Trump unveiled new details of the UFC cage fight that is taking place on the White House lawn next month. Flanked by four UFC fighters who will take part, Trump showed off renderings of the plans for the bizarre event, including a huge cage octagon just a few steps from the Oval Office. He said about 5,000 invited guests would be seated on the South Lawn for the fight, with an additional 75,000-100,000 people in the "fan zone" on the Ellipse, the park adjacent to the White House grounds. "These are real warriors," Trump said of the fighters. "When we talk about warriors, these are warriors. These are the toughest people. These are the greatest fighters in the world . They come from all over the world. Some come from extreme poverty. Not too many people come from Fifth Avenue, for the most part." Of the unprecedented event, Trump said: "We're having a big fight. It's never gonna happen again. Never happened before." UFC fighter Justin Gaethje, who will take part in the headline title fight, praised Trump's support for the sport saying he had been a "big part" of having it enter the mainstream. "They thought we were just absolute animals," Gathje said. "Well, they were right about that," Trump replied. Apparently — you put a cage right outside the Oval Office and have two people beat each other unconscious in it. So on June 14th - the octagon goes up on the White House South Lawn. The fighters literally walk out through the Oval Office. And tens of thousands of people watch it on giant screens on the Ellipse. But unless you’re a donor, a lobbyist, a senator, or someone with serious juice in the Trump network — you’re not getting into the main event. The seats on the South Lawn itself will not be on sale to the public. This has never been done before. A professional sporting event — a world title fight — held on the grounds of the White House, headlining the sitting president’s birthday party. But...why? Well, Trump and UFC boss Dana White go back. Trump let the UFC host fights at his Atlantic City casino back in the early 00s when nobody else would touch them. Since then White has been one of Trump's biggest backers, both financially and by being a vocal supporter. It's also being shoehorned in to the celebrations to mark another birthday - America's 250th anniversary. Three events will take place over the course of a weekend in downtown Washington DC. Friday 12th June: Press conference at the Lincoln Memorial, with the fighters appearing on stage. Saturday June 13th: "Fan Fest" opens on the Ellipse to watch the ceremonial weigh in. This will be followed by a concert by the multi-platinum Grammy award-winning country-rock group Zac Brown Band. Sunday June 14th: Fight takes place from 8pm ET (1am UK time). There will be two title fights, a lightweight bout between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje , and a heavyweight fight between Alex Pereira and Ciryl Gane .
