Açıklamada söz konusu askerin, bir bahis sitesinden 400 bin dolar para kazanmak için gizli bilgilere erişimini kullandığı ve bu bilgileri sızdırdığı ifade edildi. ABD Adalet Bakanlığı askeri, gizli hükümet bilgisini kişisel kazanç için kullanmak, halka açıklanmayan hükümet bilgilerini çalmak, mal dolandırıcılığı, elektronik dolandırıcılık ve yasa dışı para işlemleri yapmakla suçladı. Van Dyke, suçlu bulunması durumunda yıllarca hapis cezasına çarptırılabilir.
