The defeat means West Ham remain in the relegation zone, two points behind 17th-place Tottenham Hotspur, who face Chelsea this Tuesday. Victory for Roberto De Zerbi’s side would relegate their London rivals, while a draw would also effectively see West Ham demoted to the second tier due to Tottenham’s superior goal difference. Nuno’s side, who host Leeds United next Sunday, need Chelsea to win for it to go to the final day. West Ham have lost their last three league games. In the immediate aftermath of Sunday’s defeat at St James’ Park, fans in the away enclosure voiced their displeasure as the players applauded them. “It hurts a lot (hearing the fans chant that),” said head coach Nuno in his post-match press conference. “This is our job, this is our life but the fans are right. Today they showed their anger and frustration, and they have reasons to do it. “But it hurt the boys, it hurts us, and it hurts the club. That’s why I think this week we should finish the season with dignity and respect for the fans. “This week we should do better, so we can show at the London Stadium, to our fans, a different performance, a different attitude in terms of the game. Anything is possible, let’s wait for Tuesday. “Even though it’s difficult, we’re still alive, let’s see. There’s some hope, but more than anything is respect. Let’s prepare ourselves and show a better performance. This is what our fans deserve.” Nuno stuck with the wing-back system from last weekend’s narrow 1-0 loss to Arsenal and only made one change, with Callum Wilson replacing Taty Castellanos in the starting XI. But Newcastle scored twice in the opening 19 minutes, courtesy of forwards Nick Woltemde and William Osula. Nuno then reverted to a 4-4-2 formation in the 25th minute when he brought off defender Jean-Clair Todibo for striker Castellanos. The January arrival scored a consolation goal in the 69th minute. “We started really bad again, you can see the mistakes that we made,” Nuno added. “Maybe it was not the best decision (to start with three at the back), maybe we didn’t prepare the players well enough. We have to look and take responsibility for it. “I think our opponents must work much harder to achieve a goal. It’s too easy and it makes our lives so difficult after, but it’s disappointing. Look, we’ve been in this situation for a long time. We had a couple of chances today to really show and do it, but today was a missed opportunity and we have to realise that it’s extremely difficult now (to stay up).” West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes also spoke after the game. The 21-year-old told Sky Sports: “This week we just need to believe and do our things. It is our (the players’) responsibility, and we need to do much better. Everyone needs to take responsibility for this moment. We need to be positive because we have one more game. “Of course (I understand fan frustration at full-time). We didn’t play with full fight and spirit like against Arsenal. We missed everything – fight and energy. We were late to second balls. “It is very hard to think about the future but anything can happen. Hopefully, they (Spurs) lose against Chelsea, and in the last match, we go with everything.
