White people set to become minority in US by 2050 - 13 years before Britain
White Americans will become a minority group in the US for the first time in the country's history by 2050, according to fresh projections from the US Census Bureau.
The data reveals a dramatic transformation in the nation's ethnic composition over seven decades - just 40 years ago, around 80 per cent of all Americans were white.
But by the middle of this century, that proportion is forecast to fall to just 47 per cent, with further decline to 44 per cent anticipated by 2060.
The sweeping changes are being propelled by a combination of factors, including international migration and movement within the country's borders.
Declining birth rates among white Americans are also accelerating the shift.
The changes are expected to reach their peak impact between 2040 and 2050.
They represent one of the most rapid population shifts in the US since the first European settlement was established more than 400 years ago.
Census officials project the trends will reshape not only national demographics, but fundamentally alter the ethnic makeup of individual states across the country.
Currently, there are six white-minority states - but a further 10 are set to see their white populations drop below 50 per cent by 2050.
Florida is expected to experience one of the steepest declines, with white residents comprising just 39 per cent of the population by the middle of the 21st century.
In 2000, only three states had minority white populations - California, Hawaii and New Mexico.
Hawaii has never recorded a white majority in its history.
By the 2020 census, Texas had fallen to 40 per cent white, whilst Maryland reached 47 per cent and Nevada 46 per cent.

Looking further ahead, projections suggest 24 states will have white populations at or below 51 per cent by 2060.
These include Massachusetts at 46 per cent, North Carolina at 49 per cent and Virginia at 47 per cent.
West Virginia remains the least ethnically diverse state, expected to retain an 86 per cent white population by 2050.
Across the pond, Britain is set to join the US as a white-minority nation by 2063, according the research by the Centre for Heterodox Social Science.
The analysis also found that foreign-born residents and their direct descendants will make up a majority of the UK's population by 2079.
White British people are already a minority in a number of British cities, including London, Birmingham and Leicester.
That report suggested the share of the population born in Britain will drop to 39 per cent from 81 per cent by the end of the century.
In 2022, it was revealed that London and Birmingham have become minority white British.
A report by the ONS a year later stated 46 per cent of Londoners were from black and minority ethnic groups.
A census from the Birmingham City Observatory noted in 2021 that the percentage of white people had declined from 57.9 per cent to 48.6 per cent between 2011 and 2021.
