With the summer season now here and forecasts predicting temperatures will remain above 25C throughout much of the UK in coming days and weeks, a cleaning specialist has issued a caution that many commonly overlooked kitchen areas could be attracting additional flies into homes during warmer weather and becoming a hotbed for unwanted fly activity. While numerous Welsh households focus on disposing of rubbish and clearing away leftover food, specialists indicate three neglected areas in the kitchen might become significant attractions for flies as temperatures continue to climb across the UK. Nancy Emery, home and cleaning specialist at Tap Warehouse , has shared that warm weather combined with open windows, barbecues and heightened food waste can quickly render kitchens more appealing to pests, making sink drains, pet feeding bowls and unwashed recycling a breeding ground for unwelcome fly activity, reports the Express . The expert shares: "During hot weather, many of us naturally become more aware of things like overflowing bins or food left out on the side. But there are a few easy to miss areas in the kitchen that can also attract flies, especially when temperatures rise. "Things like pet food bowls, sink drains and rinsing out recycling are often overlooked, but keeping on top of them can make a big difference in helping to keep kitchens fresher during a heatwave." To stop flies dominating your kitchen throughout the summer period, Nancy has identified three overlooked areas households should prioritise cleaning more regularly. Tiny particles of food trapped around plug holes and sink drains can become far more noticeable during hot weather, potentially attracting flies into the kitchen. A quick rinse or wipe of the sink drainer and plug hole with washing-up liquid after cooking or cleaning can keep the area hygienic and reduce unpleasant odours. Leftover wet pet food and remnants from dry food can swiftly draw flies in warmer conditions, particularly when bowls are left out for lengthy periods. Nancy recommends rinsing bowls after feeding where practical and possible, along with cleaning the surrounding feeding area daily to minimise lingering smells and food debris. Unwashed meat trays, tins and food packaging placed into indoor recycling bins can quickly begin to produce unpleasant and unwanted smells in higher temperatures, especially after barbecues or outdoor dining. Where possible, rinse food packaging before placing it in recycling and move recycling bags or containers outside regularly during warmer spells to avoid attracting flies indoors.
