'We went into the woods to make a pool for our kids - now everyone wants to come'

Two dads from the valleys spent the bank holiday heatwave making their kids a pool by taking two tarpaulins up to the local stream. Lee Warren, 44, and Paul Gillard, 41, from Ton Pentre, said it felt like they were "reliving their childhoods" as they got to work making the pool. They took their supplies - beer and tarpaulins - up to the woods and got to work in the blazing hot 30C heat of bank holiday Monday. Paul said: "My son and all his friends go up there regularly, and they had made a little dam, just a small one of course with it being built by kids. But they wanted me and another one of the dads, my mate Lee, to come and help them make it bigger. "We went up there with two tarpaulins and a couple of cans of beer, then ended up building the kids a massive swimming pool. They spent the day there, jumping in there and just having fun. It's fair to say the kids are loving us now. "The water is up to their waist, so they can properly swim. We have nicknamed it Ton Pentre Lido. "It has not just been a hit for our kids but for all their mates. Plus we posted it on Facebook and then loads of people have come to enjoy it from Tonpentre but also travelling from Treorchy and all up the valley. "There was over thirty kids up there at one point. I am just happy to see my son outdoors and not on his Xbox!" The local community have thanked the two dads profusely for giving local children a safe place to hang out and cool off in the hot weather . One commented on a video of the dam on social media saying "it is so nice to see kids being kids. Well done dads." Paul said the pool is located in Havard Woods in Ton Pentre. He hopes the local community get to enjoy it not just during this heatwave, but all summer long.
