The former All England champion, chief national coach and one of the most influential figures Indian badminton has produced, had just watched his daughter, Gayatri Gopichand, and Treesa Jolly win a World Championships medal in Delhi. He stood in the mixed zone under the arena lights, taking questions long after most coaches would have slipped away. There was pride in his voice, and something rarer for a man usually all business courtside: lightness. He joked with the organisers. He answered patiently. For once, he seemed happy to just stand there and let the moment last. A day later, another father spoke about the same medal, from a very different kind of room. Jolly Mathew was on the phone from Kerala, his voice carrying down a patchy line from Cherupuzha, a small town in the state's far north where badminton courts did not exist until he built one himself. He too wanted to talk about the journey that had carried his daughter from a courtyard in Kannur district to a World Championships podium in the capital. There was pride in his voice as well, and the particular disbelief of a man watching, from several states away, years of quiet, unglamorous work finally bear fruit in front of the whole country. For Gopichand, this story is a familiar one, retold every time his name comes up: the All England triumph of 2001, the coaching career that followed, Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, Olympic medals, World champions, an academy built from nothing in Hyderabad. His name has been woven into the story of Indian badminton for two decades. This time, it is Jolly Mathew's turn to tell his story, in his own words.THE VOLLEYBALL COURT He was a physical education teacher, and a well-regarded volleyball coach at St Joseph's School in Cherupuzha, Kannur. They were growing up around the sport, after all, watching it played out every evening a few feet from their front door. But as he watched them, he began to think more carefully about what would actually suit a child that young. "She was very interested in sports. She wanted to play, and she was very enthusiastic," Mathew told IndiaToday.in. "At home, I used to train girls in volleyball, and she would watch them practise and play. She was very interested in all of that." "Since badminton is a game that can be played from a very young age, I thought it would be suitable for her and introduced her to badminton." He knew the sport himself, had played it a little in his own time, and so, almost by accident, the volleyball coach became a badminton coach for an audience of one. "I thought that if I was training the children from the neighbourhood, I should also bring my own child into the field," Mathew said. "I wanted to find a game that suited her, and because I played badminton to some extent, badminton was the first game that came to my mind." There was only one problem. There were no badminton courts anywhere near Cherupuzha. "There were no courts in our area, so I built an indoor court in our house and trained her there," he said. It began life, in fact, as that same volleyball court, repurposed. "My father was a volleyball coach, and we had a volleyball court in our backyard. At that time a lot of players were taking up badminton, so he changed it into a badminton court for me and my elder sister," Treesa told the BAI on Sunday. Courtesy: BAI Kerala's monsoon made a mockery of an open-air court for half the year, so a sheet of tarpaulin went up over the top, and the rain became just another obstacle to train through rather than one to train around. Money was the harder problem. There was no shortcut around that one. "We did not understand that initially. We went to one state-level tournament and only later realised how the system worked," Mathew said. Selection to the Kerala team ran through a string of ranking tournaments spread across the state, each one demanding travel, entry fees, equipment, and time away from a modest teacher's salary. "So we had to travel to all these tournaments." No sponsor stepped in to soften any of it. "We faced a lot of financial difficulties. There was no sponsorship from anyone, whether from the association or elsewhere. We had to bear the expenses ourselves." Treesa remembers those years too, though what stays with her most is what her father chose not to let her feel. "The initial days were difficult. It was an expensive sport and we had to face a lot of financial struggles. I think my father somehow never made me feel all those kinds of pressures," she said. "That confidence gives you something else, when your parents are telling you that you have the talent to play at that level. My parents are so amazing in that regard. I am here because of my parents." He coached her himself until Class 7. Then, without much fuss, he stepped aside, because staying on would have meant standing in his daughter's way."THERE IS ONLY ONE PV SINDHU" Treesa was a good student, the kind whose report card kept every conventional door open. Good marks in her Plus Two exams. The well-worn Kerala route, doctor, engineer, a stable government job, was hers for the taking if she wanted it. Mathew understood the appeal better than most. But the more he watched his daughter on that tarpaulin-covered court, the less that route looked like the right one. "We had our own ambitions, of course," he said. "But I never looked at sport as something where you play simply to get a job. I saw it as something that could be used for health, physical fitness and enjoyment." Then that thinking sharpened into something closer to conviction. "How many doctors can we have?" he asked. "You can have many doctors from one school or one panchayat. But how many people can become Indian players?" His ambition for her was not a modest one. "First, you want to become an Indian player. After that, you want to reach the World Championships and the Olympics." Even that, in his telling, undersold what he saw in her. "For her, it was not just about going to the Olympics. She wanted an Olympic medal." He had seen enough by then to know his daughter carried something most children don't. "If you study well, you can become a collector. There can be thousands of collectors. But there are very few people who win medals at this level. There is only one PV Sindhu. There cannot be many PV Sindhus." Mathew didn't know that one decision of his would, ten years down the line, inspire an entire village. "And I think my father is the star. He is the one. When I used to start playing, there was nothing there in my village. Then after the Commonwealth Games medal, I can see so many courts now. Most students are coming to me. People are excited to play. (Photo: Instagram) KNOWING WHEN TO LET GO Mathew had taken his daughter as far as he reasonably could. Going further meant handing her to someone else, and he knew it. His friend Dr Anil Ramachandran, head of sports at Kannur University and a badminton specialist, took Treesa in. A house was arranged near the university, and from Class 8 through to Class XI, Ramachandran coached her. It was during this stretch that she climbed the ladder in professional badminton. The national camp followed, and with it, eventually, Gopichand. On the strength of an international medal and that junior ranking, Treesa was pulled into the Target Olympic Podium Scheme. In February 2020, still in Plus One, she reported to Gopichand's senior camp in Hyderabad. A journey that had begun on a patch of packed earth in Cherupuzha had reached the summit of the Indian system. In 2021, it turned again.TWO DIFFERENT BURDENS Treesa and Gayatri were paired together not long after the country emerged from Covid, when coaches at the academy were experimenting with combinations from a pool of promising juniors. Treesa's game lived at the back of the court. Gayatri's lived at the front. On paper, before a shuttle had even been struck, it made sense. The two girls arrived at that partnership from opposite ends of the country, and opposite ends of privilege. Gayatri had grown up carrying her father's surname, a name that opened doors before she'd earned the right to walk through them, and closed off any margin for being seen as ordinary. Treesa had grown up in a town where the nearest badminton court was the one her father built with his own hands. Both carried weight neither had chosen. Gayatri has spoken openly about hers. "Honestly, I think sometimes on court, I do feel that pressure," she said. "I wouldn't say I don't, but there is also a lot of guidance. And that is the better part of it." Courtesy: Badminton Photo Over time, she has learnt to carry it differently. "There are a lot of people who tell me, 'You are Gopi sir's daughter. You need to prove yourself.' But honestly, I think I am much better now. There is pressure, but then I have learnt how to handle it." Treesa's weight was of a different kind entirely, less about proving she deserved a name, more about honouring what her family had spent to give her a chance at all. Somewhere in the years that followed, on courts across the world, those two separate stories folded into one. They reached two All England semi-finals together. They won a Commonwealth Games medal. They became India's leading women's doubles pair, spoken of as one of the country's brightest hopes for the future. But a question hung over them long after the results said they should have outgrown it. Could this pair, so good by Indian standards, be genuinely good by the world's?THE POWER WAS ALWAYS THERE The answer arrived in Delhi with a sound the whole arena came to recognise: the crack of a Treesa Jolly smash landing flush. Her power became one of the most talked-about threads of the entire World Championships. Commentators kept returning to the force she generated from deep in the backcourt, a physicality that felt almost out of place in the delicate, wristy world of doubles badminton. It gave the Indian pair a weapon few teams had an answer for. Its roots trace back further than anyone watching in Delhi would have guessed, back to that volleyball court her father built. "My jump smash also is possibly because of my father making me train with volleyball drills at the start," Treesa said. "When I was in Class I, I would do the volleyball jump serve. (Photo: AP) The volleyball coach who once trained neighbourhood children in his own backyard had, without quite meaning to, built one of Indian badminton's most fearsome weapons. Mathew saw the aggression in her long before it had anywhere useful to go. "She has always had tremendous energy, power and aggression," he said. What changed, over years at the highest level, was the shape around that raw power, the control, the timing, the disguise. The fire stayed exactly where it had always been, waiting for a stage big enough for it.AND THEN DELHI They arrived in Delhi after a disrupted season, with Treesa's injury having kept them out of competitive action for close to three months and pushed them down the rankings. But the 45-day preparation under Gopichand and B Sumeeth Reddy gave the pair time to rebuild, with Gayatri taking on more backcourt responsibility and Treesa returning with the power that had always defined her game. “I wanted to cover the backcourt when she comes back because it's not going to be easy after the injury to come back and cover that much area,” Gayatri said. Treesa was getting better at the net. Add some touch to the power game, she was preparing to be the lethal version of her that she showed in Delhi. They hammered the seventh seeds. They beat the fourth seeds, a Chinese pair they had never once beaten before. Against the world's top-ranked pair in the semi-final, they took the opening game before the run finally ended. The medal that came from it was bronze. By then, the colour almost felt beside the point. Gayatri and Treesa had stood across the net from the best pair alive and made them uncomfortable for the better part of a match. Whatever question had trailed them for years, about whether they could be more than India's best, had an answer now. On Saturday, Gopichand stood in the mixed zone and spoke about his daughter. He insisted he did not feel anything extra because she was his daughter. But the pride was impossible to miss. On Sunday, four hundred miles south, Mathew said his piece down a phone line in Kerala. He spoke of a daughter who had walked into a World Championships with barely a month of training behind her, and of a result nobody in his house had quite dared to expect. Gopichand's story built a nation's belief that badminton could produce champions. Jolly Mathew's, quieter and slower, has so far only had to inspire a village.
