Scott Wachter / Imagn Images Share articleSan Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is “progressing” through concussion protocol, coach Mitch Johnson said Thursday, but his status for Game 3 against the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday remains uncertain. Johnson said Wembanyama, who suffered the concussion in Game 2, will travel with the team, but the Spurs coach reiterated that the Spurs are following the league’s protocol. Wembanyama was spotted at practice Thursday, walking and talking with Johnson. “He looks good,” Johnson said Thursday. “We’ll keep going through the protocol and hope he continues to progress. It’s pretty straightforward, so obviously, we hope he’ll be back at some point, and we’ll allow the protocol to play out. There’s nothing more important than his health.” When asked if Wembanyama has been ruled out for Friday’s game, Johnson added, “We haven’t even had that discussion. The protocol is the protocol and the league is actually who’s at the top of that. … Whatever that timing is, that’s what it will be.” Wembanyama exited the Spurs’ eventual 106-103 loss in the second quarter Tuesday after falling face-first to the floor while driving to the basket. After lying on the hardwood for several seconds, he appeared to be dazed and groggy when he attempted to stand. Wembanyama later got up on his own, went to the locker room for further evaluation and was ruled out for the remainder of the game. A concussion diagnosis initiates a 48-hour league-mandated recovery period before he can go through a return-to-play evaluation. The NBA’s concussion protocol states that, “Prior to a player being allowed to return to game participation, the evaluating physician (or athletic trainer) is required to review video to assess mechanism.” The NBA’s concussion policy says “there is no timeframe to complete the process” and “each injury and player is different and recovery time can vary in each case.” Wembanyama won’t be cleared to return to action until he’s without concussion-related symptoms at rest, has been evaluated by a qualified physician, has completed the league’s return-to-participation process (such as jogging and non-contact drills) and discusses a potential return with the NBA’s director of concussion program. The Spurs were 12-6 in regular-season games played without Wembanyama. He dominated in the Spurs’ Game 1 win Sunday, scoring 35 points.
