ALBAWABA - Washington said it removed Syria from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism, which Damascus has been on since 1979.
Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa praised the American decision and said the country was "turning the page" on a painful chapter of its past and heading for a new era of development and reconstruction.
In a video statement shared on X, al-Sharaa said, "Today, Syria is shedding a dark stain from its shoulders and tearing up with its own hands a page from its painful past, to move into a new space of development, reconstruction and building."
He added, "Great people of Syria, you have done it again. Sanctions have been lifted from you and restrictions have been removed."
Nonetheless, the Syrian leader also thanked President Donald Trump for this "historic decision."
He further thanked "all brothers and friends who stood with Syria and the Syrian people."
