US, Iran Agree to Last-Minute Ceasefire as Hormuz Tensions Ease

Agadir – The US and Iran agreed to a conditional two-week ceasefire late Tuesday, stepping back from any major military actions just hours before US President Donald Trump’s imposed deadline to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

“I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE!” Trump announced.

The US president added that the reason for this is “that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Long-term PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.”

This announcement marked a sharp reversal from earlier in the day, when Trump issued a warning if Tehran failed to comply with US demands.

“A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World,” Trump said early Tuesday.

The breakthrough came as a result of  efforts led by Asim Munir, Pakistan’s army chief, and Shehbaz Sharif. Sharif confirmed that he had invited delegations from both Washington and Tehran to continue talks in Islamabad later this week, signaling a possible pathway toward longer-term de-escalation.

“To allow diplomacy to run its course, I earnestly request President Trump to extend the deadline for two weeks. Pakistan, in all sincerity, requests the Iranian brothers to open the Strait of Hormuz for a corresponding period of two weeks as a goodwill gesture,” said the PM of Pakistan Sharif.

“We also urge all warring parties to observe a ceasefire everywhere for two weeks to allow diplomacy to achieve conclusive termination of war, in the interest of long-term peace and stability in the region,” he added.

Trump also attributed these results to the ongoing conversations with Sharif and Asim Munir which requested to stop any destructive actions and support in Iran agreeing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and ensure its safety.

For its part, Iran responded to Sharif and Asim Munir request and agreed to the peace proposal to start negotiations with the US as well as guarantee a safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz in coordination with Iran’s Armed Forces.

“If attacks against Iran halted, our powerful Armed forces will cease their defensive operations,” Iran’s Foreign minister Abbas Araghchi shared in a statement on the behalf of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran.
