The GS paper 1 held on the second day of the UPSC CSE Mains exam was conducted for 250 marks, with candidates required to answer 20 questions in three hours. Questions 1 to 10 carried 10 marks each and had to be answered in 150 words, while Questions 11 to 20 carried 15 marks each and required answers in 250 words. According to Dr AR Khan, senior faculty and director of Khan Study Group, the paper maintained the traditional requirement of factual clarity while simultaneously testing whether candidates could connect that knowledge with contemporary developments. “The paper has maintained its conventional outlook. One requirement is factual clarity, like the question on Aeolian processes in geography or Ashokan inscriptions in history. At the same time, they are trying to see how the whole thing fits into the contemporary,” Khan said. He added that while GS Paper 1 appeared manageable, the difficulty level could change in the remaining papers. “GS Paper 1 is on the doable side, but this has happened before. Khan said this combination indicated that candidates could not afford to prepare for different subjects in isolation. Instead, the paper rewarded those who could integrate historical, geographical and social perspectives while linking them to developments around them. “Somebody who is prepared for integrated thinking, not in silos like geography, history and social issues, would get better marks,” he said. For instance, Dr Khan added, questions that drew on issues such as water resources, demographic changes, trade, land-use changes and social transformation required candidates to move beyond textbook definitions and establish connections between different dimensions of an issue.
