The heatwave temperatures are set to return to areas of the UK next week as England and Wales look set to see temperatures as high as 35C.

Following a weekend of cooler temperatures and rain across parts of the north and north-west of the UK, temperatures are set to reach heatwave levels in various areas.

Some areas of the UK will see their fourth heatwave of the year.

Heatwaves are declared when temperatures reach or exceed a threshold temperature for three consecutive days.

Some areas of the UK, including Monmouthshire and Exeter, Devon, are still in the midst of their third heatwave, with temperatures reaching thresholds for the 20th consecutive day.

Threshold temperatures range from 25C in the north and west of the UK to 28C in parts of east England.

Threshold temperatures were widely met across the UK in May, June and July.

Next week will see high pressure set to build to the south of the UK, meaning wet weather fronts will stall.

Wet weather will be focused on northern and western areas next week, with southern parts of the UK to see soaring temperatures once more.

A fourth heatwave of the year could be on its way however, the Met Office has warned that: “If only one or two stations reach heatwave criteria, that would not be defined as a heatwave.”

England and Wales are set to see peak temperatures ranging from 25-32C.

The higher temperatures will be focused on central and eastern England on Tuesday before heading north and west.

The risk of another heatwave comes amid Natural Resources Wales announcing that a drought has officially been declared.

The status was implemented following record dry conditions, heatwaves, wildfires and dwindling river water supplies in the region.

It marks the first area of the UK to officially declare drought status this year.

The areas affected by the drought status declaration include North Gwynedd, Ynys Mon, South Gwynedd, Dee (Wales), Clwyd, and Upper Severn.

The region has received less than two per cent of anticipated rainfall for the month thus far, meaning this July is on course to become the driest on record for Wales in almost 190 years without significant rainfall next week.

Exceptionally dry conditions have led to drying riverbeds, mounting concern from farmers about grazing and water availability, and significantly increased the risk of wildfires – with North Wales in particular experiencing a number of major blazes in recent weeks.

River flows across large parts of the region have been marked as exceptionally low, and some locations are recording or are approaching record low status.

In many areas of North Wales, there has been no significant rainfall since July 6, NRW said.
