Britain's third heatwave of the year is poised to strengthen, with forecasters predicting temperatures could climb back towards the mid-30s.

Following a modest cooling for some areas on Monday, much of England and Wales is expected to see the mercury rise above 30C once again in the coming days.

This year has become the first on record to register 35C on six separate occasions, surpassing the previous benchmark of five days set in both the infamous summer of 1976 and 2020.

Additionally, 2026 marks the first time temperatures of 35C or higher have been recorded across three consecutive calendar months, with May, June and July all experiencing extreme heat.

The extreme heat has sparked serious wildfire concerns across the country, with Natural England's Fire Severity Index placing much of England at "very high" risk and parts of southern England and the Midlands at "exceptional" danger levels.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue declared a major incident on Sunday night after crews were called to tackle a blaze at Tintwistle Moor, one of two moorland fires in the county over recent days.

Area manager Ellie Gillatt said: "Firefighters continue to face challenging conditions as they work to tackle the wildfire and protect the surrounding infrastructure and environment."

Emergency services in the south have also been stretched, with East Sussex Fire and Rescue responding to a substantial open fire on the South Downs near Eastbourne on Saturday.

Crews simultaneously battled flames at Devil's Dyke in West Sussex's South Downs National Park.

Deputy Wildfire Lead at the National Fire Chiefs Council Dave Swallow, cautioned that the dry, sunny and hot conditions "significantly increase wildfire risk".

The heatwave has also brought tragedy to Britain's waterways, with several fatalities reported in recent days.

Two men lost their lives on Sunday at Seaton Carew beach in Hartlepool after entering the water to rescue two children who had got into difficulty.

Superintendent Glen Ward of Cleveland Police said: "We know it is inviting in the hot weather, but we would encourage people to refrain from entering any open water at all. Today we have sadly seen the true tragedy that can happen as a result."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

Devil's Dyke in West Sussex

Derbyshire Constabulary confirmed that an 18-year-old man's body was recovered from near a weir at Darley Abbey Mills after two teenagers encountered trouble in the water.

Greater Manchester Police reported that an 18-year-old male died at Dovestone Reservoir in Oldham on Friday.

Amber heat health alerts from the UK Health Security Agency remain in force for the Midlands and southern England until 9pm on Wednesday, warning of significant strain on health and social care services.

Yellow alerts cover Yorkshire and northern England for the same period, with officials highlighting increased risks of water-related incidents including cold water shock and drowning.

Dovestone resovoir

Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster David Hayter confirmed that central and southern England along with Wales can expect several more consecutive days above 30C, though the hottest conditions will gradually shift westward.

Meteorologist Honor Criswick noted: "For the time being it looks like the heatwave is set to continue, but depending on where you are, there may be a brief respite in the heat to come."

The Met Office has advised the public to take standard heat and sun precautions, with UV and pollen levels expected to remain high or very high across much of the country.
