The UConn Huskies almost won a third national championship in the Dan Hurley era this past season. They ultimately fell short in the National Championship game, losing to the Michigan Wolverines. It was one heck of a run, and there were some very memorable moments and performances throughout the campaign for UConn. One of the most notable was star guard Solo Ball, averaging 12.8 points, three rebounds and 1.5 assists per game while nursing a wrist injury for much of the season. Perhaps the wrist was bugging him during March Madness, because his production dipped a bit. He went from the totals above to averaging 9.2 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists in six NCAA Tournament games. Either way, UConn has announced that Ball will undergo surgery and focus on recovering from the wrist injury next season. He'll miss the entirety of the 2026-27 season and take a medical redshirt year. BREAKING: UConn's Solo Ball will miss the 2026-27 season following wrist injury and return for 2027-28 following a medical redshirt, per release.Averaged 12.8 PPG and made 77 three-point shots last season.Significant Big East News. It does sound like UConn is expecting him to come back in 2027-28. In fact, that declaration was a part of the announcement. "Solo is a true Husky and a champion who would do anything to be out on the court," Hurley said in a statement released by the program. "This guy has shown throughout his career what a warrior he is. Solo is going to use the season to get his wrist fully healthy and then come back next year as one of the best guards in America while cementing his legacy as an all-time great at UConn." That must be one bad wrist injury, because missing an entire season due to a wrist problem is almost unheard of. It's especially notable because this past season is only a few weeks in the rear-view mirror. Perhaps Ball and UConn gamed out that he'd miss some time early in the season and instead decided to preserve his eligibility for one more year. Either way, the Huskies will be without Ball next season, which is going to hurt. He's averaged 13.6 points and 3.3 rebounds per game over the past two seasons in 74 starts. From Leesburg, Virginia, Ball is a former four-star recruit. Andrew Kulha is probably the only sports writer you know who also doubles as a mortician.
