Rabat – Local authorities in Tetouan reported that two children died early Saturday after part of a residential building collapsed in the old medina.

The building, consisting of a ground floor and two upper floors, housed five families, with a total of 11 residents.

According to authorities, emergency services quickly arrived at the scene, including local officials, security forces, and civil protection teams, who began search and rescue operations and secured the surrounding area.

Rescue teams recovered the body of a 10-year-old boy from the rubble. An 8-year-old girl was pulled out in critical condition and taken to the hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Authorities said the public prosecutor has been notified and an investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances of the collapse.

Incidents like this have raised ongoing concerns about the condition of old buildings, especially in historic city centers, where some structures are at risk of collapse due to age and lack of maintenance.

Similar concerns emerged recently in Fez, where two residential buildings collapsed, killing a total of 22 people. Following that tragedy, authorities launched a judicial investigation into 21 people suspected of violating building and safety regulations.

Charges include involuntary manslaughter and injury, bribery and corruption, illegal handling of non-transferable property, complicity, and the unlawful issuance of administrative certificates.
