By GREG WOODFIELD, US SENIOR REPORTER Published: 17:40, 2 July 2026 | Updated: 17:40, 2 July 2026 Postal worker Brandi Reynolds was kidnapped and shot dead while working her route in rural North Carolina, just six months after husband Brent Reynolds died when his pick-up truck hit a tree and overturned. The 35-year-old mom of two young daughters was slain on June 26, allegedly by career criminal William Craig Durham, who lived in the same community of Roaring River as Reynolds. Now, the Daily Mail can reveal that the young mother, who appeared to the outside world to have a wholesome family life, was a convicted fentanyl dealer. While social media images of the victim showed her gushing over her children and portraying a blissful existence with her husband, a darker side was revealed in court documents obtained by the Daily Mail. Both Reynolds and her late husband were arrested and pleaded guilty in 2022 to using their home in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains as a base for fentanyl and marijuana dealing. She was given 30 months of supervised probation in May 2023, while her spouse was handed 36 months supervised – and was still serving that when he died on Christmas Eve, 2025. One indictment for the mom in Wilkes County Court read that she 'knowingly and intentionally kept' a house 'that was used for keeping and selling controlled substances, marijuana and fentanyl.' Another said she conspired with her husband 'to commit the felony of selling and delivering marijuana' and had 'drug paraphernalia, baggies, wax rubber containers, plastic totes and scales to package and repackage.' Wife and husband Brandi and Brent Reynolds pose on the beach. Brent died in a fatal car crash on December 24, 2025, and Brandi died on June 26, 2026 Mugshot of murder suspect William Craig Durham, who has a rap sheet that includes kidnapping and robbery with a dangerous weapon A third charge of 'trafficking opium or heroin' said she had more than 4g but less than 14g of fentanyl with the intent to sell it. Records at the same court also show Reynolds had a North Carolina certificate of tax liability case of $21,691.68, while another was for $173,013.69. Durham, the man accused of killing her, has a lengthy rap sheet including violent crime. He appeared before a judge on Monday in Wilkesboro where he faced first degree murder and kidnapping charges. He was not required to enter a plea and was denied bond. One of Reynolds' family members told the court that the 56-year-old had allegedly been threatening the young mom and had broken into her home in the past, WGHP reported. However, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation would not confirm to the Daily Mail whether Reynolds and Durham had previously crossed paths. 'That would be part of our investigation and I cannot comment,' a spokesman said. Durham's rap sheet dates back to 1988, starting with driving offenses and escalating to more serious crimes, often involving violence. He has been convicted of escaping jail, serious assault, intimidating a witness, possessing a firearm as a felon, second degree kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon and first degree kidnapping. Witnesses to the horror on Friday afternoon reported seeing a man in a gray Nissan Altima threatening a woman in a US Postal Service vehicle and hearing gunshots, according to the Wilkes Record. Police have said the mother was restrained before she was killed in the community of Hays about eight miles from Roaring River, according to a warrant. Wilkes County Sheriff's Office deputies found her dead when they arrived. Durham was swiftly taken into custody. Reynolds paid tribute to her children two months after her husband died. Alongside a photo of the girls posted on Facebook, she wrote: 'The reason I get up every morning. Love these babies. They are what makes life worth living.' Her mother, Kathy Byrd, who also lives in Roaring River, posted a grief-stricken tribute to her late daughter after the tragedy, writing: 'I love you baby girl! This has forever put a hole in my heart.' Renolds and her husband with their two young daughters, who have now been left orphaned A member of Reynolds's family told a court in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, that Durham had previously broken into her home in Roaring River Court papers reveal that Reynolds was accused of using her house for selling fentanyl and marijuana. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 months supervised probation Then, after the postal worker's horrific killing, a wave of social media tributes followed. Many emphasized the pain of her family and her devotion in her role as a hard-working mail carrier. 'Brandi was my friend. Mail carrier doesn't do justice to her kindness and her caring of her people, she was always smiling, always happy,' local resident Lorraine Jennings wrote. '101 degrees or freezing, Brandi was always smiling. Brandi, I'm so proud to have known you. One of the sweetest people I've ever known.' 'I am so sorry for the loss of this precious woman,' another local poster, Renee McWilliams, wrote. 'Life never seems to be fair… the best people endure unspeakable tragedy.' 'My heart is breaking for you, and can't get you and your family off my mind,' someone else commented. Another user posted that they were 'so sorry for your loss. Prayers for you and your family.' USPS said in a statement that 'Brandi Reynolds was delivering mail on her route when the incident occurred. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to her family and co-workers. No further information can be provided at this time, as the investigation is ongoing.' The Daily Mail reached out to Reynolds's family for comment, but members did not respond.
