ALBAWABA - Tunisian authorities announced they have recovered the bodies of 21 migrants who sank at sea, off the country's southeastern coast.
Tunisia's national guard said that a boat carrying 15 people capsized at sea, killing 21, while two remain missing as the search operation continues. They added that one person was saved from the boat.
The incident took place about 14 nautical miles off the shore of Zarzis on Friday night.
"Search operations resulted in the recovery of three bodies yesterday and nine bodies today, bringing the total to 12," the national guard revealed in a statement.
Protests erupted on Saturday night in Ben Guerdane, a Tunisian city near the border with Libya, where 14 of the migrants were from, blocking roads and setting tyres on fire over the incident.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said that at least 914 migrants have lost their lives or gone missing attempting to cross from Tunisia to Lampedusa, Italy, across the Mediterranean in search of better lives in the EU.
