Trump renews call for Canada to become “cherished 51st state”

ALBAWABA- US President Donald Trump has once again escalated political rhetoric toward Canada, stating in a post on Truth Social that Canada should become the United States’ “cherished 51st state,” framing the proposal as a solution to trade frictions, border controls, and security coordination between the two neighbors.

Trump argued that full integration would eliminate tariffs, remove border barriers, and align Canada more closely with US defense systems, including what he referred to as the “Golden Dome” security framework.

He also reiterated his longstanding claim that the United States effectively “subsidizes” Canada, suggesting that statehood would be economically and strategically beneficial for both sides. Canadian officials have firmly rejected such suggestions, reiterating that Canada’s sovereignty is non-negotiable.

The remarks come at a sensitive moment in US–Canada relations, following recent statements by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who has warned that Canada’s historic economic dependence on the United States has become a strategic vulnerability.

In a video address released on April 19, Carney said shifting US policies, particularly a move toward protectionist trade measures, are exposing risks for Canada’s export-driven economy. He pointed to pressure on key sectors such as automotive manufacturing, steel, and lumber, alongside broader uncertainty that is discouraging investment.

“The US has changed, and we must respond,” Carney said, stressing the need for Canada to strengthen industrial capacity and reduce overreliance on its southern neighbor.

His government has since unveiled a revamped advisory committee on Canada–US economic relations, signaling a more structured effort to recalibrate bilateral ties on what he described as “reciprocal and transparent” terms following his recent parliamentary victory.

The committee is part of a wider push by Ottawa to reinforce economic resilience and diversify trade relationships while maintaining cooperation with Washington. However, Trump’s renewed statehood remarks underscore the widening rhetorical gap between the two allies, even as their economies remain deeply integrated.
