Donald Trump reaffirmed his backing for Israel in a Truth Social message on Saturday evening, merely hours after reports suggested Benjamin Netanyahu had been unsettled by an earlier comment he made. Writing around 9pm ET, the US president described Israel as a "great ally" of Washington while taking aim at European nations that refused to take part in the Iran conflict. Earlier reports portrayed a concerned Netanyahu who had been shocked by Trump's statement that Israel was "prohibited" from launching air strikes in Lebanon. Sources told Axios that Netanyahu was "personally stunned and alarmed" when aides informed him of the message. In Friday's statement, Trump said: "Israel will not be bombing Lebanon any longer. They are PROHIBITED from doing so by the U.S.A. Enough is enough!!!", reports the Mirror US . His following message, however, indicated unwavering American backing. "Whether people like Israel or not, they have proven to be a GREAT Ally of the United States of America," Trump wrote. "They are Courageous, Bold, Loyal, and Smart and, unlike others that have shown their true colors in a moment of conflict and stress, Israel fights hard, and knows how to WIN!" It comes after Iran announced the strait’s reopening to commercial vessels after a 10-day truce was announced between Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon. The reopening caused oil prices to fall. Trump, however, said the US blockade of Iran’s ports “will remain in full force” until Tehran reaches a deal with the United States. The US president had imposed the blockade after a round of historic face-to-face talks in Pakistan between the countries ended without an agreement. US forces have sent 23 ships back to Iran since the blockade began on Monday, US Central Command said on Saturday.
