ALBAWABA - U.S. President Donald Trump said in a statement that Iran will face “the most crushing economic operation ever” and any country that trades with Iran will “face tremendous economic consequences.”
In a Truth Social post, Trump warned Iran by saying it had “failed to take” the many opportunities for a deal and that, consequently, would be subject to “economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale”, adding:
“ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences,
“Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies — it all needs to stop NOW. You know who you are. This will be an ECONOMIC D-DAY, and we need all of our Allies to stand with the United States of America to isolate, and defeat, the Iran threat.”
This “unprecedented” economic move would be the latest in a long series of U.S. sanctions on Iran’s oil and shipping and financial sectors alongside naval blockades of Iranian ports, targeted companies, brokers and tankers accused of helping Iran sell its oil abroad.
Iran, however, sees nothing new; with Iran’s FM Aragchi saying that the American threats were “diversion from America’s own crisis: unprecedented debt & surging interest costs.”
“Doubling down on failed policies will only bring further defeat—and enmity of Iranians. US economic terrorism threatens global economy and sovereignty worldwide,” Aragchi said in a post on X.
With various news media outlets in Iran such as the IRIB, Tasnim, and Fars, saying that the threats are nothing new and that following “the failure of military aggression” Trump is trying to save face with economic actions.
“[The U.S.] has been trying for years to block any financial and economic ties with Iran, [Iran] learned how to circumvent these restrictions and has become very skilled at doing so”. Tasnim said regarding the announcement.
Brett Erickson, managing principal at Obsidian Risk Advisor offered his opinion on Trump’s announcement, saying that the biggest constraint to the U.S. campaign “remains time”.
“Economic warfare on Iran not only needs to produce results, they need to produce said results in an expeditious manner,” he added.
