Trump-backed MAGA firebrand Andy Ogles loses congressional seat to dairy farmer in nail-biter race

Despite Trump's endorsement, Ogles was beaten by Charlie Hatcher, the state's former agriculture commissioner, in a race that became one of the most closely watched Republican contests in the country. With 89 percent of the votes tallied, Hatcher was leading Ogles by seven points, enough for the race to be called.   In the final stretch of the campaign, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee stunned Republicans by endorsing Hatcher just one week before Election Day in a rare move for a governor challenging an incumbent from his own party. Lee praised Hatcher as 'a friend for 25 years' and highlighted his conservative record, saying: 'I know Charlie. I know his conservative values and how much he loves our country.' Lee also emphasized that Hatcher had 'stood with President Trump since day one,' framing his endorsement as a choice for leadership and experience rather than a rejection of Trump's agenda. The financial battle also intensified as Election Day approached. Federal Election Commission filings showed Hatcher raised more money than Ogles, bringing in nearly $694,500 compared with Ogles' roughly $590,500. Hatcher entered the final stretch with a larger cash reserve, while Ogles gained support from conservative groups including the House Freedom Fund. Outside groups also poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into the race, with the Invest in Tomorrow Coalition PAC spending nearly $700,000 to boost Hatcher and attack the incumbent. The race's unexpected competitiveness was driven in part by Tennessee's newly redrawn congressional map. Republicans reshaped the 5th District earlier this year after the Supreme Court narrowed the reach of protections under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, splitting Memphis among three congressional districts and transforming the seat into a far more rural, agricultural district. The new boundaries created an opening for Hatcher, whose career as a dairy farmer, veterinarian and former agriculture commissioner gave him deep ties to the communities that now make up much of the district. Hatcher's campaign argued that voters were looking for a conservative focused less on controversy and more on results.  His sharpest attacks centered on Ogles' reputation as a headline-making MAGA firebrand, arguing that Republicans needed a representative who could deliver rather than simply fight political battles. Hatcher contrasted his own background in agriculture and state government with what he described as Ogles' focus on controversy, telling voters they needed a 'workhorse, not a show horse.' Ogles entered the race with a strong national profile among conservatives, but his time in Congress has also been marked by a series of controversies that became a key issue in the primary. He has faced scrutiny from the House Ethics Committee over campaign finance and financial disclosure questions, allegations he has denied, while critics have also challenged parts of his résumé involving anti-human trafficking work, law enforcement experience and nonprofit fundraising. He drew national backlash over comments following the October 7 Hamas attack, when critics accused him of promoting indiscriminate violence against Palestinians – an accusation he rejected, saying he was referring to Hamas terrorists. Ogles has also attracted attention for his hard-line immigration positions and his proposal for a constitutional amendment that would allow presidents serving nonconsecutive terms to seek a third term, widely viewed as an effort to allow Donald Trump to run again. In November, Hatcher will face Democratic challenger Chaz Molder, the mayor of Columbia, Tennessee, who emerged as the leading Democratic contender in the newly redrawn 5th District and was initially seeking to make the race a test of Ogles' record in Congress before his defeat Molder is hoping to reclaim a seat Democrats held for nearly two decades before Republican-led redistricting dramatically reshaped the district, transforming it into a GOP stronghold.
