اقترب منتخب تركيا خطوة هامة من التأهل لنهائيات كأس العالم لكرة القدم المقرر إقامتها صيف العام الحالي في الولايات المتحدة والمكسيك وكندا بعد فوزه على ضيفه الروماني بهدف دون رد يوم الخميس في الدور نصف النهائي. وتقمص فردي كاديوغلو دور البطولة في المباراة، عقب تسجيله هدف منتخب تركيا الوحيد في الدقيقة 53، بعدما تابع تمريرة أمامية ساحرة من أردا غولر، نجم فريق ريال مدريد الإسباني قبل أن يسدد في المرمى. وضربت تركيا موعداً يوم الثلاثاء القادم مع الفائز من مباراة المربع الذهبي الأخرى في هذا المسار بين منتخبي سلوفاكيا وكوسوفو، التي تجرى في وقت لاحق من مساء الخميس، من أجل حجز مقعد في مونديال أميركا الشمالية. ويسعى منتخب تركيا للمشاركة في كأس العالم للمرة الثالثة، بعدما سبق أن تواجد في نسختي 1954 بسويسرا و2002 في كوريا الجنوبية واليابان، على أن يلعب المتأهل من هذا المسار في المجموعة الرابعة إلى جانب الولايات المتحدة، باراغواي وأستراليا.
