Transgender basketball player says playing against biological women is 'childhood dream'

French transgender basketball player Julie Tetart has said the opportunity to compete in the WNBA would be impossible to refuse, despite ongoing debate surrounding transgender participation in women's sport.

The Monaco player addressed the possibility of playing in the world's leading women's basketball league during an interview with OutKick, while discussion continues over transgender athletes competing against biological women.

"If they contact me, I won't say no," Tetart said.

"But you have to be realistic: I'm old, and there are far better players than me.

"Obviously, it's a childhood dream just like for any female basketball player, but unfortunately, it's not possible.

"The league, yes. The country, no, haha."

Tetart, who came out as transgender in October 2021, did not expand on the comments.

Tetart was also asked about recent remarks made by Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who has called for the protection of women's sport.

Speaking to ESPN, Cunningham said: "I want to protect young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men."

Asked for a response, Tetart answered with a single word in French: "Aucun", which translates to "None."

The comments come after an outstanding campaign in France's second-tier Ligue 2.

Tetart led the division in both scoring and rebounding during the 2025-26 season, averaging 21.2 points, 20.2 rebounds and two assists per game.

Those performances earned Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Domestic Player of the Year honours.

Debate over transgender participation in women's sport has intensified in recent months, with Cunningham's comments generating widespread discussion across the WNBA.

Supporters of the Fever guard have since organised demonstrations outside Indiana games backing the stance on protecting competition for biological women.

The issue has also prompted governing bodies to review eligibility policies.

Last month, the WTA announced a mandatory one-time gene test for all players under updated eligibility regulations, becoming the first major professional sports organisation to introduce the measure.
