Tragic ending for baby girl born prematurely after mom, 17, was allegedly shot dead by boyfriend
By SOPHIA BAUM - FEMAIL REPORTER, INTERN Published: 22:17, 8 June 2026 | Updated: 22:17, 8 June 2026 A premature baby girl, born after her teenage mother was mercilessly shot dead outside of a rental home in California, has died, her devastated family announced. Now a double tragedy, 17-year-old Jariah Edwards's daughter, who was hospitalized in critical condition, passed away after being taken off life support on June 7. The teenage girl was allegedly gunned down by her boyfriend, Trevon Williams, 21, who was the father of their unborn daughter. Williams is accused of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, possession or transportation of a machine gun, and discharging a firearm. Edwards was eight months pregnant when her life was brutally ended with a gunshot wound to the head in San Diego's Bay Park neighborhood just after 1am on May 30. Following the shooting, her unborn child was delivered via an emergency C-section. The baby was taken off life support just over a week later, according to AZ Family. The newborn died after suffering a severe hypoxic brain injury, caused by a loss of oxygen flow prior to the C-section, according to the San Diego Police Department. Grief-stricken friends and family shared the teen's lust for life describing Edwards to Live 5 as 'fun loving and a 'young woman excited to become a mom'. Jariah Edwards, 17, was lured outside of the rental home where she was allegedly shot to death by her boyfriend, who had driven across state lines to see her, police said Edwards is accused of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, possession or transportation of a machine gun, and discharging a firearm Police rushed to the short term rental on Gardena Avenue after multiple 911 calls reported hearing gunfire go off. Officers arrived at the scene at 1am and found the unresponsive teen suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Police immediately began lifesaving measures, before paramedics rushed her to the hospital where she died. Doctors then performed an emergency C-section in a desperate effort to save her child. The infant remained in the NICU until she was taken off life support eight days after the shooting. According to close friends Amara and Jamila Corley who spoke to Fox Carolina, Edwards possessed a 'natural nurturing energy' and was devoted to her next chapter as a mother. Now, in a horrific twist of fate, her loved ones have traded plans for celebration of new life for mourning the loss of the mother and child. Edwards, pictured pregnant, was shot and killed on May 30. Her boyfriend was arrested for her murder The shooting occurred outside a rental home in San Diego (pictured) Whilst still struggling to come to terms with her death, her loved ones have been left planning her funeral and set up a GoFundMe in her name. Authorities say the victim had traveled from Phoenix, Arizona, to San Diego for a family getaway. Edwards's boyfriend, Williams, traveled from Arizona to San Diego separately in a Lyft and tracked Edwards down, according to 123 ABC Arizona. During Williams's arraignment, prosecutors alleged that he made the trip with the intent to kill Edwards, who was pregnant with his child. According to 123 ABC Arizona, Deputy District Attorney Alex Lorens said Edwards and Williams began dating in September 2025 and had an on-and-off relationship, marked by domestic violence and threats towards Edwards and the child. At the time, Edwards was reportedly not speaking to Williams and had blocked his phone number. The court heard that Edwards was planning to file a restraining order before she was killed. Prosecutors say Williams booked a Lyft to take him to Edwards's location. Pictured: Williams and her sister Jaidyn Edwards Alleged killer Trevon Williams, 21, is seen in court Williams allegedly waited outside the residence and arranged two DoorDash deliveries in an attempt to coax the teen outside the house. Enticed by a bouquet of flowers, Edwards ventured outside the property, where Williams allegedly ambushed her and proceeded to swiftly shoot her in the head. Lorens alleged that the suspect 'made an audio recording to a third party' admitting to the shooting. 'I shot this ----- in the face. On God, I shot this ----- dead,' Williams allegedly said in one recording that was mentioned in court, per AZ Family. Another obtained by AZ Family heard Williams allegedly say: 'Yo I'm not going to be on the game for years. I just killed my baby mama fool. They're looking for me right now.' After the shooting, investigators said Williams fled the scene to a nearby canyon. Around 3am, officers took Williams into custody after they found him hiding in a nearby neighborhood. He is being held without bond. Authorities state that a firearm was recovered at the time of arrest and prosecutors later described the weapon in court as a machine gun. 'So the type of gun that the defendant had was a gun that is not a gun that would be legal here in San Diego, but was a gun that was legal in Arizona with an extended magazine,' said Lorens. Williams has pleaded not guilty to all charges. He has a bail review hearing on June 12. Prosecutors have said the case could be eligible for the death penalty. Edwards's family was also present in court, but didn't want to speak with reporters according to AZ Family. Prior to the baby's recent death, friends and family took to social media to mourn the loss of Edwards. One of the victim's family members, Jaidyn Edwards, posted a heartfelt tribute on social media assuring the late teen that her baby girl would be taken care of. She wrote: 'I won't disappoint you when it comes to her.' 'That's the last part we have of her, while he still gets to be alive in jail,' a friend, Jamila Corley, told KNXV.
