Tragedy in Ghana: Berekum Chelsea Player Dominic Frimpong Killed in Armed Attack
Rabat – The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced on Monday the tragic death of Berekum Chelsea player Dominic Frimpong, following an armed attack on the team bus as the delegation returned from an away match.
The team was traveling along the Goaso-Bibiani road when they were reportedly intercepted by a group of masked gunmen armed with assault rifles. The attackers had blocked the path to trap the vehicle.
According to reports, the gunmen opened fire when the driver attempted to reverse the bus to escape the ambush. In the ensuing chaos, several players and staff members fled into the nearby bushes to seek cover.
The Ghana Police Service has launched an official investigation and a manhunt for those responsible. Authorities have also initiated efforts to locate any players or team officials who may still be missing after scattering during the assault.
In an official statement, the GFA confirmed it is in constant communication with the club and relevant authorities to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. “We urge that all necessary measures be taken to ensure justice is served,” the association stated.
“The Association will engage key stakeholders to review and strengthen security arrangements for clubs traveling for domestic competitions to prevent such tragic occurrences in the future.”
This news marks a dark day for African football. A sport intended to be a source of unity and peace has been struck by a senseless act of violence, leaving the continental football community in mourning.
