Top Data Management Trends in Financial Services

Banks and insurers have been collecting data for decades. But whether they are it well is a different story. The gap between what financial firms technically have and what they can actually act on remains stubborn — and the pressure to close it keeps growing. Regulators want traceable data, customers expect instant personalization, and newer competitors built on modern stacks are making legacy infrastructure look slow. So here’s what’s actually shifting in financial data management right now.

Market context: where things stand

The scale of the problem is visible just from watching where capital flows. Cloud data warehouse deals, data governance platform contracts, and AI infrastructure spending across large financial institutions have all trended upward through 2024 and into 2025. That’s not surprising. Instead, what is surprising is how many firms are still in the middle of migrations they started half a decade ago.

The organizations making the most visible progress tend to be the ones that didn’t try to build everything themselves. Working with specialists who focus on IT services for financial services has helped a number of institutions modernize data infrastructure without dismantling core systems that, frankly, still work. The complexity here is real: different regulatory regimes, formats inherited from acquisitions, systems that haven’t changed since the 1990s sitting next to Kubernetes clusters. Generic cloud vendors don’t always have answers for that combination.

So what does the actual landscape look like? Some mature technologies are finally getting proper adoption. Some genuinely new approaches are still proving themselves. And a handful of buzzwords that are mostly noise. Let’s go through what matters.

The expectation of real-time processing has shifted

Three years ago, “real-time” in banking often meant near-real-time — batch jobs every 15 minutes, maybe every five. That definition is no longer acceptable in most contexts.

Stream processing in production

Apache Kafka has become the standard backbone for financial data pipelines that need to move fast. It’s no longer experimental — large transaction volumes essentially require it. On top of Kafka, Apache Flink has gained traction for stateful stream processing: running complex calculations on live data without waiting for a batch window to close. 

Networks like Visa use this kind of architecture to score transactions for fraud in under 100 milliseconds. The window for a decision closes before most people finish reading this sentence.

What real-time processing actually enables:

  • Fraud detection at the moment of transaction, not in overnight reports
  • Credit scoring that reflects current behavior rather than last month’s snapshot
  • Dynamic margin calls in trading that react to live market conditions
  • Customer alerts that are genuinely timely — not notifications about something that already happened

Latency isn’t one thing

Worth noting: not all financial firms have the same latency requirements. A retail bank sending a push notification two seconds after a purchase is fine. 

High-frequency trading infrastructure operating in microseconds is an entirely different engineering challenge. Regulatory scrutiny around timestamp accuracy has also increased — which means latency measurement itself has become a compliance concern, not just a performance one.

AI and machine learning: honest assessment

Every financial institution has an AI announcement. Fewer have AI results. Here’s where the genuine progress is.

Fraud detection: the clearest win

ML-based fraud detection is the most mature AI application in financial services, and the performance gap between machine learning and traditional rules-based systems has become substantial enough to show up in business outcomes. 

Mastercard’s Decision Intelligence Pro — rolled out in 2024 — uses a recurrent neural network that evaluates a cardholder’s transaction history in real time. The reported improvement in detection accuracy over their previous generation was large enough that it changed how they talk about the product publicly. That’s not a trivial signal.

The architecture choices that make this work:

  • Feature stores (Tecton, Feast) that allow the same features to be used in both training and real-time serving — which sounds obvious but historically caused models to perform worse in production than in testing
  • Model monitoring platforms like Arize AI that track data drift — when real-world patterns start diverging from what the model was trained on
  • Explainability layers using SHAP values or similar — because regulators require banks to explain credit decisions, and “the model decided” is not a sufficient answer

Credit risk still unsettled

Alternative data in credit underwriting is interesting and genuinely messy. Companies like Upstart have built models incorporating hundreds of behavioral and contextual variables beyond traditional credit scores. 

The results in terms of approval rates for thin-file borrowers have been notable. But regulatory questions — specifically whether alternative data inadvertently proxies for protected characteristics — haven’t been fully resolved. CFPB guidance in this area landed somewhere between cautious approval and pointed warning.

The honest state of play: the models work. The legal and compliance framework around them is still catching up.

Generative AI: useful tool, not a decision engine

Bloomberg GPT, Morgan Stanley’s OpenAI-powered advisor assistant, various internal copilots — these are real deployments used by real people daily. They are useful productivity tools where a human reviews the output. 

But they are not autonomous decision engines for anything with compliance exposure. The risk of plausible-sounding wrong answers in a domain where a wrong number triggers a regulatory breach is a genuine constraint, not overcaution.

Cloud migration is still the middle of the journey

Most large financial institutions started cloud migration four to six years ago. Almost none are finished. The gap between the strategy deck and the architecture reality is wide.

What actually moved and what didn’t

The “cloud-first” mandate at most banks has quietly softened into “cloud-appropriate.” Core banking systems — processing millions of daily transactions with near-zero downtime requirements — are largely staying on-prem or on dedicated infrastructure. Not because cloud can’t handle volume, but because the reliability profile of mainframe infrastructure for that specific workload is extremely difficult to replicate elsewhere. The mainframe isn’t staying out of inertia. It’s staying because nothing else does that particular job as reliably.

What has moved: analytics and warehousing (Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery are now standard), customer-facing applications, new product development, dev/test environments.

What hasn’t: core transaction processing, data with strict residency requirements, workloads where latency predictability is business-critical.

Data residency: the complication that Compounds

GDPR was the opening move. Since then, data localization requirements have expanded across India, China, Indonesia, Brazil, and elsewhere. For a global bank, this creates a fragmented architecture problem: serving a unified customer experience while keeping underlying data in multiple distinct regulatory buckets.

This has pushed investment into:

  • Data clean rooms — privacy-preserving environments where data can be analyzed jointly without raw data crossing organizational or geographic lines. AWS Clean Rooms, Google’s PAIR, and LiveRamp are all seeing financial services interest.
  • Federated learning — training ML models on distributed data without centralizing it. Still early in most financial contexts but gaining traction in fraud consortium work, where competing banks want to share detection signals without sharing customer records.

Data Governance: the boring work that actually matters

Nobody outside a data team gets excited about governance. And yet, dig into almost any major regulatory failure in financial services over the past decade and data governance problems are somewhere in the chain.

What modern governance actually requires

A governance program in 2025 isn’t a policy document and a quarterly meeting. It includes:

  • Data lineage tracking — knowing where every piece of data came from, how it was transformed, and where it ended up. Not optional for BCBS 239 compliance or for audits. Tools like Alation, Collibra, and Apache Atlas are the standard choices.
  • Automated data quality monitoring — pipeline-level checks running continuously, flagging anomalies before they contaminate downstream reporting
  • Data cataloging — making datasets discoverable across business units. The classic pain point: an analyst spends days tracking down data that already exists somewhere else under a different name
  • Access control and entitlements — who accessed what record, and when, needs to be answerable on demand

The BCBS 239 reality check

The Basel Committee published its principles on risk data aggregation in 2013. Banks were supposed to comply by 2016. Follow-up assessments years later showed compliance gaps still persisting at major global institutions. That’s not because the principles are unclear — they’re actually quite specific. 

It’s because retrofitting governance onto decades of accumulated legacy infrastructure, across multiple jurisdictions, is genuinely difficult work. The firms making real progress treat governance as infrastructure investment, not a compliance checkbox exercise. The distinction matters more than it sounds.

Data mesh: promising concept, early innings

Data mesh proposes distributing data ownership to domain teams — trading, retail banking, insurance — rather than centralizing everything in a platform team. Each domain owns its data products and is responsible for quality and accessibility.

Thoughtworks articulated the concept around 2019. By now, meaningful numbers of financial institutions have run pilots. ING Bank has been among the more public adopters in banking. The appeal is genuine: domain teams know their data best, decentralization removes bottlenecks, and it scales better as use cases multiply.

The challenges are equally real. Distributed ownership requires strong data engineering skills spread across business units, not concentrated in a central team. Quality governance gets harder when responsibility is fragmented. The tooling — Atlan, DataHub, Stemma — is still maturing.

The honest take? It is worth watching carefully, not worth betting architecture on until more production case studies exist at real scale.

Blockchain: narrower than advertised, real in specific spots

Most blockchain pilots from 2016-2020 went nowhere. The coordination and governance requirements between competing institutions turned out to be harder than the technology itself. That said, some applications have held up.

Trade finance platforms built on distributed ledger infrastructure have reduced letter-of-credit processing time meaningfully. Digital assets custody — BNY Mellon and Fidelity Digital Assets have both built institutional-grade infrastructure here — requires entirely different data management practices than traditional securities. 

The ASX’s cancelled CHESS replacement project, after years and significant investment, serves as a useful reminder that implementation complexity is consistently underestimated in this space.

The frame that fits best: distributed ledger solves specific multi-party coordination problems where distrust between participants is the core obstacle. It’s not a general-purpose data infrastructure play.

What’s worth watching through 2026

Synthetic data — generating artificial datasets that mirror real customer data statistically, used for model training and testing without privacy risk. Gretel.ai and Mostly AI are the main players. Adoption is growing anywhere compliance sensitivity makes using real customer data difficult or impossible.

AI agents for pipeline management — systems that monitor data pipelines, identify quality issues, and propose or implement fixes autonomously. Still early, but appearing in pilot programs at larger institutions. The trend is worth tracking even if the tooling isn’t production-ready everywhere yet.

Platform consolidation — the modern data stack has become genuinely fragmented. Snowflake acquiring governance tools, Databricks building end-to-end capabilities, Salesforce’s data cloud push — the direction is toward fewer best-of-breed point solutions and more integrated platform plays. Expect procurement conversations to get simpler and vendor landscapes to thin out.

The actual limiting factor

The firms pulling ahead aren’t necessarily making the most aggressive technology bets. They’re the ones that sorted out fundamentals first: clean lineage, real governance, architecture that moves data where it needs to go at the speed required.

The tools available today are good enough for most of what needs doing. The limiting factor is almost always organizational — the will to clean up technical debt accumulated over two decades, the processes to maintain data quality at scale, and treating data management as a core business capability rather than something IT handles quietly in the background.

That’s not a satisfying conclusion. But it’s the accurate one.
