His fellow England international, Anthony Gordon, will also miss Saturday’s trip to title contenders Arsenal with a hip problem, though may return for the Premier League game against Brighton & Hove Albion next weekend. But Livramento, whose place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad is far from assured, has suffered a thigh injury and, although Newcastle are hopeful he will not be sidelined for an extended period, he may not feature in any of the five games of 2025-26. Bruno Guimaraes, the captain, however, is in contention to start for the first time since February, having recovered from a hamstring problem and a bout of the mumps. “With Tino, he went for a scan initially, we don’t think it’s a bad injury,” Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said on Friday. “We’ll wait and see if he’ll play again this season. He’s due to have another scan this weekend to determine the extent. “Tino is a very level-headed, (with a) stable mentally. He’s had a frustrating season. He was outstanding last year, fit and available and really contributed to what we delivered. This year has been different, he hasn’t been able to get that run of games to get his best form. “Unfortunately, Anthony won’t make the game. He hasn’t trained this week. Not a serious injury, but not in time for this game. Hopefully the next one.” Newcastle have lost eight of their last 11 Premier League games and have slumped to 14th in the Premier League. Speculation linking several key players, including Gordon and Livramento, with a summer exit continues to dominate the headlines. But Howe refuted the suggestion that Gordon’s absence was related to reports of him leaving the club. “Anthony Gordon is injured, 100 per cent,” Howe said. “So for me that’s a non-question.” Guimaraes, meanwhile, missed 12 games between February and April but the talismanic Brazil international is in contention for a start at the Emirates, having come on against Bournemouth last weekend. “He’s had a full week of training and trained really well,” Howe said of Guimaraes. “It’s been tough for him. You could see against Bournemouth he was struggling to adapt to the pace. The week he’s had this week will serve him really well. He’s such an important player for us we want to have him on the pitch as soon as possible, but we have to make sure it’s not to soon and not to his detriment.” Spot the pattern.
