Tigers place Javier Báez and Casey Mize on injured list

Detroit placed both infielder/outfielder Javier Báez (sprained right ankle) and right-handed pitcher Casey Mize (right adductor strain) on the injured list Wednesday afternoon. The team recalled infielder Jace Jung and left-handed pitcher Enmanuel De Jesus in their places. Báez injured his right ankle in Tuesday’s loss to the Braves while trying to avoid a tag from first baseman Matt Olson and going to the ground with what appeared to be a nasty injury. Báez eventually got to his feet but struggled to put weight on his right leg. He was carted off the field. Báez has appeared in 17 games at shortstop, 10 games in center field and three games at second base this season. Without him, the Tigers will likely turn to Matt Vierling and Wenceel Pérez in center. Shortstop, though, could be more of a question. Rookie Kevin McGonigle is now the only true shortstop on the Tigers’ roster, though it’s possible Hao-Yu Lee could play the position in a pinch. Zach McKinstry is on the injured list with left hip/abdominal inflammation, but could return within the next week. For now, Jung can play first, second and third. A first-round pick from the 2022 draft, Jung was recalled mostly for his left-handed bat. The Tigers are likely to face right-handed starters in four of their next five games. Jung was hitting only .222 through 99 at-bats in Triple-A Toledo. He is a .190 hitter in 55 career MLB games. Mize, who grimaced after multiple pitches Tuesday and eventually departed the game after fielding a dribbler in the third inning, leaves the Tigers with a hole in their rotation. De Jesus was a darling of spring training but was demoted seven days ago after posting a 10.13 ERA in his first six regular-season games, all out of the bullpen. In Mize’s absence, the Tigers could lean into bullpen games and their patented “pitching chaos” approach until Justin Verlander (also on the IL with left hip inflammation) returns.
