This is the end for Doctor Who

For Doctor Who fans, rumours that the show is on the brink of cancellation or delay are a regular, quickly dismissed occurrence. Still, the reports this week that the BBC series’ long-promised Christmas special will not be broadcast this year do feel like something of a death knell for the series.

Since Ncuti Gatwa’s shock departure from the sci-fi programme in May 2025, Doctor Who’s future has felt particularly uncertain. Yet when the (not all that surprising) news came in October that Disney would not be continuing as a series co-producer, the BBC threw ravenous fans a bone.

Doctor Who would be back, it announced, but not until Christmas 2026, with a special penned by showrunner Russell T Davies. The thought of waiting over a year for a new Doctor Who was painful. But what choice did we have?

So the Christmas special has become a life raft, a promise that kept Whovians afloat even when a lack of information – dismissed by Davies as the show simply cracking down on spoilers – began to set off alarm bells. This latest report suggests the worry is justified. According to The Sun (which has a pretty good track record of accurate reporting on Doctor Who), the festive extravaganza has been pushed back. The reason? They cannot find an actor to take on the mantle as the 16th Doctor.

Reading that the role has become something of a poisoned chalice, the fan in me feels disappointed. I get it, though. Playing such a historic role should be every actor’s dream, but recent Doctors haven’t had an easy ride in the TARDIS, on screen or off.

For years now, Doctor Who’s quality has been on the decline. There were some stand-out moments in the Disney+ era, episodes like “Boom”, “73 Yards”, “Lux”, “The Well”, where Gatwa and the franchise both shone. But there were a lot of clangers in there too, with both series setting up huge, overarching plots that fizzled out with minimal payoff.

As public faith in Doctor Who has dwindled, the show has simultaneously found itself at the centre of the culture wars. No matter who is cast, that performer will either be deemed emblematic of further “wokery” from the franchise or a sign of the show giving in and pandering to the trolls. They can’t win.

Hyper-aware of its precarious position, Doctor Who has tried to curry favour with its audience through nostalgia. In theory, the Christmas special should have been a done deal after Gatwa regenerated into former companion Billie Piper in the last series’ cliffhanger ending. She should be leading things.

At the time, the decision felt like a clear stop gap, done as part of reported reshoots following Gatwa’s departure to bide time until someone was cast as the Doctor long-term. Now, the decision feels reflective of the kind of short-sighted scrambling that Doctor Who and Davies have operated under for the last few years.

Reports claim that Piper’s episode will instead air in April 2027, but this only prolongs the problem. Even if we do eventually get this special, it’s hard not to imagine a world where a new series is delayed and the show put on indefinite hiatus.

But (and I’m going to whisper this), that might not be such a bad thing. Right now, Doctor Who is clearly not pleasing anyone. The show is in need of a designated, extended break for the team to recalibrate and develop a long-term vision that will allow the show to continue its historic legacy.

That means fresh blood, behind and in front of the camera. With a proper break, Doctor Who can take the time to find a little-known future star, like Matt Smith was – someone who doesn’t see the role as a millstone around their neck, but a career-defining opportunity.

If or when this special does make it to the air, we can’t expect miracles. But if this is the end of Doctor Who (for now), let it be followed by a period of reflection that can breed reinvention. It’ll take clear-eyed vision to revitalise the show, but it clearly won’t stem from more of the same.
