It comes after a local TD hit out at what he described as the ‘toxic influence’ of social media after Jamey Carney’s own social media accounts were flooded with thousands of vile comments. This week, the sister of the 43-year-old mother of one, Devon Bennett, shared a GoFundMe page set up to help her family, writing: ‘My sister, Jamey Noel Carney, was murdered on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, in Killarney, Kerry, Ireland. Please, feel free to share.’ Among the condolences to the family and people sharing their shock at the news, the post received multiple mocking emojis and comments. One wrote: ‘Free, free savages! FAFO! Sad for her daughter, but, survival of the fittest does filter the stupid people out of our population.’ The online abuse continued this weekend as the boyfriend of the Ms Carney remains in detention in Jordan Another account said: ‘The woman was an Islamist and a jihadi supporter. The likes of her, who assist terrorists, put other people’s lives in danger.’ Others described the murdered mother as having ‘suicidal empathy’. Ahmad Al-Saqar, 28, will have his detention reviewed by a Jordanian judge next week as Irish authorities insist the detention in the Middle Eastern country was not done at their request. Jordan’s powerful Public Security Directorate sanctioned the detention of Mr Al-Saqar just over 24 hours after he arrived back in his home country last week. He was detained after travelling to Jordan from Turkey and will be held for an initial period of 15 days.  If the authorities wish to keep him in detention beyond 15 days, the matter must be brought before a judge in Amman. Meanwhile, tributes have poured in for Ms Carney from friends who knew her and her 13-year-old daughter. One promised to ‘never let your death, or the way you lived your life, be in vain’ and to ‘always be there for your precious child’. Another said the arrest of the prime suspect in Jordan had brought ‘relief’ that ‘there will be accountability’. Kerry Sinn Féin TD Pa Daly this week publicly hit out at online trolls who mocked the murdered American woman. He said comments ridiculing a woman who has died should have no place online or in public discourse, adding there appears to be little monitoring or enforcement by the platforms. ‘If these comments were made in Temple Bar on a Saturday night, the person responsible could be arrested for a breach of the peace or for using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour intended to provoke a breach of the peace,’ he said. Mr Daly urged the Government to take a tougher line with social media companies.
