The newbuild housing estate with a 'road to nowhere': Isolated residents are unable to get deliveries after street into 120-home town was left unfinished

The route, intended to connect two housing estates in Undy, Wales, is being dubbed a 'road to nowhere' - with residents complaining of stray deliveries and 'confusion for emergency services'. Aerial images show the end of the road at the Rockfield Farm estate unfinished - leaving neighbours isolated from the rest of the town. Local residents in the new homes claim courier drivers and guests have also been getting lost. The road was intended to connect the new housing estate in Undy, Gwent, with new-build homes on nearby Vinegar Hill. But a cabinet member at Monmouthshire Council admitted Rockfield Farm estate is 'not properly connected to the wider community' due to a 'missing part of the road'. One householder, Elizabeth Leyshon, 36, said: 'It is crazy. People can't find us because the road meant to reach us just goes into a field. 'I've ordered loads of stuff for our new house which just never gets here.' Someone could die.'  Councillor Frances West told a Monmouthshire Council planning meeting that documents showed the road should have already been completed. She said: 'The site, developed by Monmouthshire Housing Association, is fully occupied and the parcel of employment land, that hasn't been sold as yet, is not completed. 'We now have a road to nowhere and it is causing great frustration. 'If I was going to be dramatic I would have played the Talking Heads song Road to Nowhere.' The council supported her motion to 'take all such steps to comply' with the road building which sits on council land. Another local councillor, John Crook, said residents at the newbuild Seymour Place, at the top of Vinegar Hill, had also been impacted by the incomplete road nearby. He said: 'I receive many messages and emails from residents who raise concerns visitors are not able to find their homes, deliveries go astray, and – most importantly – potential confusion for emergency services.' Someone could die' Councillor Ben Callard, Labour cabinet member for resources, said the homes had 'only recently started to be occupied' and 'there is now only one missing part of the road'. 'This missing section is on land owned by Monmouthshire council where there is planning consent for employment units. I'm pleased to be able to say I will be bringing a report and recommendation to cabinet to construct this road,' he said. 'This will be very much welcomed by residents who know this housing development will only be properly connected to the wider community with the completion of this road. 'It also makes commercial sense for Monmouthshire council as it adds to the market value and saleability of the units.' Undy is an historic Welsh village in Monmouthshire in the south of Wales. Planning permission was granted for 260 homes at the Rockfield Farm site in 2018 - with 144 homes being built in the first phase of development and 120 homes in the second phase, on separate parcels of land. All homes in the second phase have been marketed as 'low carbon, net zero ready using the latest technologies such as heat pumps and solar panels to achieve an EPC A rating'. Monmouthshire Council and the Monmouthshire Housing Association have been contacted for further comment.
