These aren't just chatbots; they are digital employees capable of making decisions, spending budgets and accessing proprietary data.In the rush to secure this new frontier, I've found that much of the industry has fixated on a kill switch, or the ability to instantly sever an agent’s access if it misbehaves. While an emergency brake is necessary, it is not a governance strategy. In fact, if your primary plan for AI risk is to pull the plug after a failure occurs, I believe you are already managing from a position of tactical defeat.To lead in the age of AI, we must move beyond the off switch and embrace agentic identity and access management (IAM).The Hidden Danger Of The Kill Switch MentalityRelying on a kill switch is reactive by design. It assumes that by the time you notice an agent has gone rogue, the damage is contained. In a hyper-connected enterprise, it rarely is.A blunt-force shutdown creates its own risks. If an AI agent managing your supply chain or customer billing is suddenly killed, the resulting operational paralysis can be more expensive than the initial error.
