The alarming packing mistake that's catching out Americans... and could bring 10-YEAR prison sentence as well as a hefty $15,000 fine

But there’s one tiny item that's often found lurking at the bottom of backpacks, handbags and suitcases that's left unnoticed, could see you spending your vacation behind bars: cannabis.  Whether it’s a forgotten vape cartridge tucked inside a side pocket, an edible hiding in yesterday’s snack stash or a single pre-roll left in an old toiletry bag, travel experts say accidental cannabis discoveries at airports happen far more often than people realize. And while cannabis laws have relaxed across much of North America in recent years, crossing an international border with it is an entirely different story. US officials are heeding various warnings to American travelers that cannabis products remain illegal to bring across most international borders.  In some countries, even a small amount can lead to arrests, eye-watering fines or years behind bars. The latest alert comes from Thailand, which stiffened its penalty in June. And while the advisory level itself has not changed, the renewed warning serves as a timely reminder that one small packing mistake could quickly become a costly financial – and legal – burden. The message is clear: A country’s domestic cannabis policy does not automatically apply to international travelers. In addition to Thailand, countries including Singapore, Japan, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates boast some of the toughest drug laws in the world. In some places, even small quantities can trigger a criminal investigation. For travelers, ignorance is not a defense.   Jeffrey Hoffman, a New York cannabis attorney, laid it out to the Daily Mail: 'While we are seeing cannabis laws relaxed in countries like Canada and in various states in the US, cannabis is still generally illegal across the vast majority of the planet.' 'We have a very American-centric view of the world and that can get people in a lot of trouble, when you travel to a different jurisdiction, you become subject to its laws,' he added. After spending nearly 10 months in Russian custody, she returned to the US in December 2022 following a prisoner exchange between the US and Russia. 'Even if you’re carrying a cannabis product for personal use or have a medical prescription, that doesn’t guarantee it will be allowed at your destination,' former flight attendant Bobby Laurie told the Daily Wire.  'There is no safe harbor when traveling internationally,' Hoffman added. 'Even a mistake is no excuse.' The problem has grown as cannabis products have become increasingly difficult to identify, and gone are the days when marijuana was only found in obvious bags of dried plant material. Today’s products can effortlessly resemble typical vacation items – colorful gummies, chocolate bars, oils, capsules and sleek disposable vape pens that can easily be mistaken for nicotine products. And while some travelers may be able to remove items before departure, others only discover their mistake shortly after landing. And by then, it may be too late. Once travelers cross into another country, that country’s laws control everything that happens from there on out. Transportation Security Administration officers focus on security, and they will hand suspected violations to local law enforcement. The mistake is a costly one to make, legal representation abroad can be expensive, particularly if a traveler remains in detention while their case progresses through local courts. And for travelers without comprehensive travel insurance or emergency funds, those unexpected expenses could quickly reach several thousand dollars. So before you zip your suitcase and fasten your seatbelt, run the check. It could be the difference between a pleasant vacation and an extended stay in a foreign prison.
