By JAMES GORDON, US NEWS REPORTER Published: 01:23, 3 June 2026 | Updated: 01:23, 3 June 2026 A Texas mother who blamed her stomach pains on a bad batch of nachos was stunned to discover she wasn't suffering from food poisoning at all but about to give birth to twin boys in the front seat of a her car. Shelbee Dugger-Kemp's Memorial Day weekend camping trip near the Texas-Oklahoma border took an extraordinary turn when what seemed like an upset stomach rapidly escalated into labor, leaving her with no time to reach a hospital. Instead, the 30-year-old delivered both babies on the roadside while her husband's grandmother, known as Mimi, raced to find medical help. The dramatic arrival came more than eight weeks before the twins' due date. At the time, Dugger-Kemp was 31 weeks pregnant and spending the holiday weekend outdoors with her family. When stomach pains began, she initially suspected something she had eaten was to blame and decided it would be wise to get checked out at a hospital. Leaving her husband Michael behind with the couple's four children, Dugger-Kemp climbed into a vehicle driven by Mimi, expecting a routine examination before heading back to camp. But less than 10 miles into the journey, the pain intensified and it became clear something far more significant was happening. Texas mother Shelbee Dugger-Kemp mistook early labor contractions for stomach pains caused by what she believed were bad nachos during a Memorial Day camping trip Her first son, Kane, was born inside the car while Mimi continued driving. Just five minutes after Kane's birth, his identical twin brother Kallan was delivered on the roadside Husband Michael only learned the twins had arrived after calling his sister-in-law and hearing his wife, Shelbee, crying on the phone With an ambulance still some distance away and the hospital out of reach, Dugger-Kemp suddenly realized she was about to become a mother again there and then. 'I was like, 'Mimi, don't panic, but I'm about to have these babies in the car,'' Dugger-Kemp recalled to Today.  As Mimi continued driving and praying, Dugger-Kemp brought her first son, Kane, into the world. Just five minutes later, his identical twin brother Kallan arrived. The second birth was even more extraordinary. Kallan was born en caul, meaning he emerged still enclosed inside his amniotic sac - an exceptionally rare occurrence that is estimated to happen in only a tiny fraction of vaginal deliveries. Moments after delivering both boys, Dugger-Kemp received a call from her sister, who simply wanted the gate code to the campground where they were staying Unable to answer properly while holding two newborns, she asked Mimi to take the call. 'It was FaceTime, so I showed her that I had the babies,' Dugger-Kemp said. Both premature twins were later admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit, where they continue receiving specialized care Kane weighed 4lbs 4oz at birth, while Kallan weighed 3lbs 15oz Shelbee Dugger-Kemp was 31 weeks pregnant with identical twin boys when she began experiencing pains. She believed she had another eight weeks left to run Meanwhile, husband Michael remained completely unaware of what had unfolded. Believing his wife was still on her way to the hospital, he contacted his sister-in-law to ask when Dugger-Kemp might arrive. Instead, he was met with tears. 'When she picked up, she was crying,' Dugger-Kemp said. 'That's how he found out.' By the time Michael reached the location where the ambulance had stopped, the reality of what he had missed hit him hard. 'He was bawling his eye balls out. He was apologizing for not being there.' The twins' early arrival came as a complete surprise. Both babies had been doing well throughout the pregnancy with doctors had anticipating a planned Cesarean section closer to July. Kane weighed 4lbs 4oz at birth, while Kallan weighed 3lbs, 15oz.  'Everyone keeps asking me how I knew what to do, and I don't know,' she told NBC News. 'Your body just kicks into gear.' The twins are currently being cared for in a neonatal intensive care unit. No comments have so far been submitted.
