Joseph Maiorana / Imagn Images Share article3The Athletic has live coverage of the 2026 NFL Draft. The Houston Texans traded up to select Ohio State defensive tackle Kayden McDonald with the No. 36 pick of the second round in the 2026 NFL Draft. He was the third defensive tackle taken and the fifth Buckeyes player picked. The Texans moved up two spots to grab McDonald, sending their No. 38 and No. 91 picks to the Las Vegas Raiders, who gave up No. 36 and No. 117 in return. When Ohio State lost four starting defensive linemen to the NFL Draft a year ago, it needed new players to step up; McDonald did exactly that in elevating the defensive tackle position. He finished the season as the Big Ten’s defensive lineman of the year, posting 65 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, three sacks and two forced fumbles while becoming an integral part of the Buckeyes’ defense under Matt Patricia. The 6-foot-2, 326-pound McDonald single-handedly shut down rushing attacks on first and second down and also improved as a pass rusher as the season progressed. McDonald ranked No. 32 in Dane Brugler’s top 300 big board. Here’s what Brugler had to say about him in his annual NFL Draft guide: “McDonald’s powerful skill set is at its best when he acts as a run defender. He resets the line of scrimmage with his initial burst and power, attacking and shucking blocks from a leveraged position. He plays games of peek-a-boo (and often wins) with ball carriers willing to test A-gap run lanes, and his awareness allows him to fill up the stat sheet with line-of-scrimmage stops.” A dominant run defender who will be immediately useful on early downs — if not more. What an anonymous offensive coordinator had to say about McDonald in Bruce Feldman’s mock draft: “He’s a heck of a player. He was so physical, tough and violent, and he can run better than you’d think.” DT1 on my board (also Dane Brugler’s) and a player I thought Kansas City should have taken instead of Peter Woods. A three-down presence with nose or three-tech potential, even if he’s a little inexperienced. Grade: A McDonald to Houston might be my favorite fit in the draft. He should be an immediate impact in the run game and if the pass rush takes some time to develop, well, you have Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter to take the pressure off him. Spot the pattern.
