Bologna head coach Domenico Tedesco says that he hopes his players learn from their errors in their 1-0 loss against Lazio in their Serie A season opener on Monday evening, and has explained why he decided to leave bright-spark Federico Bernardeschi out of the starting XI.
A lone goal from Italy international Davide Frattesi just a few minutes after his introduction handed Lazio a 1-0 victory at the Dall’Ara in what was an underwhelming performance from the Rossoblu.

Tedesco reaction after Bologna 0-1 Lazio
Speaking in a post-match interview with DAZN after full-time, Tedesco was asked where he feels his side needs to improve after an underwhelming first league match of the season.
“Don’t concede goals like that, definitely” Tedesco replied (via TMW). “Be more consistent,” he continued. “We had ups and downs, not much continuity in our game and we have to score goals. I don’t think we were going to win, but we absolutely shouldn’t have lost.”
Tedesco was also questioned on his team selection given that Federico Bernardeschi, one of the bright sparks in an otherwise disappointing Bologna display, was only introduced after Lazio had gone 1-0 up.
“These aren’t decisions about one player, they’re decisions that involve others,” Tedesco explained.
“Jens (Odgaard) has done very well for the last six weeks, Cambiaghi has done very well, and then obviously Riccardo (Orsolini) is a first-choice. It’s difficult to stick him on the bench. We have a lot of players available, especially in attack, it’s not an easy decision.”
Bologna director Marco Di Vaio did not deny the fact that the club would like a new centre-back before the close of the summer transfer window after losing Jhon Lucumi to Juventus, but after watching his side’s display on Monday night, Tedesco was asked if he thinks he needs a few more additions.
He replied: “New signings are always nice. It’s not that the club hasn’t signed anyone, some have come in. We’re a young team, the new signings are particularly young.”
And what does Tedesco expect to see from Bologna over the course of the 2026-27 season?
“Nothing in particular, a positive path. We want to grow, we have to develop and I hope that this match, this defeat, will help us to grow.”
