ALBWABA - A court in Syria handed a life sentence to Ahmed Hassoun, the country's former grand mufti under ex-President Bashar Assad, who was also handed a death sentence in absentia last week.
The court convicted Ahmed Hassoun on Monday of several crimes, such as inciting sectarian strife and exploiting his position.
AFP reported that the convict was Syria's top Muslim cleric for 16 years, and he is well-known for being a close ally of Bashar Assad.
On August 11, the Damascus Criminal Court sentenced former Syrian President Bashar Assad and former military officer Maher Assad to death in absentia over crimes during the 14-year Syrian civil war that left about half a million people dead.
