Maliki, pazar günü sabah saatlerinde Irak yönünden gelerek ülkenin hava sahasına giren 3 İHA'nın hava savunma sistemlerince tespit edilerek etkisiz hale getirildiğini belirtti. Ülke güvenliğine yönelik tehditlere karşı kararlılık mesajı veren Maliki, "Savunma Bakanlığı, bu saldırı girişimine uygun zaman ve mekanda karşılık verme hakkını saklı tutmaktadır." ifadesini kullandı.
