Actor David Krumholtz has revealed he is taking an indefinite break from acting after becoming ‘frustrated’ and ‘fed up’ with Hollywood.

The 48-year-old, whose career has spanned more than three decades, surprised fans when he announced he had ‘kinda sorta’ put his acting career on hold in a candid Threads post on Tuesday.

Krumholtz, who played physicist Isidor Rabi in Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning Oppenheimer and is also well known for The Santa Clause franchise as well as a recent role in Supergirl, admitted he had been terrified of making the decision for years.

But after finally taking the plunge, he said he was hit with an unexpected sense of relief.

‘I kinda sorta put my acting career on hold the other day,’ he wrote in the now-deleted post.

‘There was a time when being competitive and self-involved really served my pursuit. That time has passed.’

Krumholtz explained that he had long worried about what walking away from the industry could mean for him financially.

He said stepping back had ‘been something I’ve been petrified to do for years,’ admitting he feared he would ‘go broke and not be able to handle being out of the game.’

However, those fears seemingly gave way to relief once he made his decision official. ‘A huge wave of relief washed over me when I sent the definitive email,’ he continued.

‘Not sure what I’m going to do for money instead, or how I’m going to do it, but I just removed a humongous burden, one that I truly didn’t fathom the weight of until it was gone.’

Summing up his feelings towards the profession, he added simply: ‘Frustrated, fed up, fried.’

The original announcement was subsequently deleted, but Krumholtz returned to Threads after being inundated with messages from fans and fellow actors.

He described the ‘love and encouragement’ he had received as ‘overwhelmingly surprising’ and clarified that he had not fallen out of love with acting itself.

Instead, it was the realities of pursuing it professionally that had apparently lost their appeal: ‘Acting professionally is a very different concept than the exercise of acting itself.

‘I’ve enjoyed every single minute of exercising the muscle. I’ve enjoyed the fanfare.’

He reiterated that the competitive mindset which once helped drive his career was no longer something he wanted to embrace.

‘There will always be great joy in the exercise. But for me, the profession has lost its gleam,’ he said.

Despite the dramatic announcement, Krumholtz later stressed that fans should not necessarily consider his departure permanent.

Responding to fellow actor Geoffrey Blake, who told him he was ‘too good to quit’, Krumholtz clarified: ‘Not quitting entirely.’

Instead, he described his decision as ‘taking a bit of a step back and an indefinite break’.

He added that the pressures surrounding his career had left him questioning whether he might have a different purpose outside the industry.

‘The stress of the moment has me wondering if there’s a higher calling to pursue,’ he wrote.

Actor Garret Dillahunt was also among those to offer his support, telling Krumholtz: ‘This is sad news for me. But I am happy for you. I understand completely.’

Krumholtz replied that his career was not necessarily ‘over,’ but that he wanted to redefine the terms on which he worked.

‘Hoping to find a new, more rewarding passion,’ he said. ‘Me, my product, and I mentality is not working anymore. I want to try to be of service. No crystal ball.’

His decision comes despite Krumholtz remaining busy on screen in recent years.

After appearing in Oppenheimer in 2023, he went on to feature in 2025 Bruce Springsteen biopic Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere and appeared in 2026’s Supergirl.

Krumholtz began acting as a child, landing film roles in Life with Mikey and Addams Family Values in 1993 before appearing as Bernard the elf in 1994 festive favourite The Santa Clause.

He reprised the role in its 2002 sequel and, decades later, returned to the character for Disney series The Santa Clauses.

His lengthy film CV also includes Slums of Beverly Hills, 10 Things I Hate About You, Ray, Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, Superbad and Sausage Party.

On television, he is perhaps best known for starring as mathematician Charlie Eppes in crime drama Numb3rs, which ran for six seasons.

He has also appeared in Freaks and Geeks, ER, The Closer, Monty, Chicago Sons and The Trouble with Normal.
